Hi,
I'm trying to figure out the best way to organize all my photos on the computer. Currently I just name a folder with the year-month-event, which works ok but sometime you just take a picture or 2 of something and instead of making a seperate folder I put them in one marked misc. Also I need someway of making comments on the pictures. I currently just let the program name them with the date and time, which is fine now, but I envision in a few years looking back and thinking "Who/Where is that?". Does anyone have any suggestions? Either a method that works well for them or a program they find useful(and why). Thanks in advance for the help.

I have used several programs, like Thumbs Plus the best, and is likely the most expensive, but it is also useful for editing and has a great browser feature. You can read a review on Steve's digicams. You can download a trial version that is nearly full-featured and try it out.
other reviews and rating on it are at:

I have Adobe Photoshop Album and I think it's great. Let's you organize pictures by attaching tags on them, which will identify them when you search pictures based on those tags regardless of where are they stored (disk drives and folders, cdrs, dvdrs, etc).

It can also let you put comments over them and fix your photos, among other things I haven't tried yet.

I very highly recommend a product called BreezeBrowser ( //www.breezesys.com/BreezeBrowser/index.html ). Excellent for managing, organizing, renaming mass quantities of images. It also has the best html photo album generation tool I have seen. The interface is a bit spartan, but it's very easy to use, and a great deal.

I've never found a photograph organising/album program that worked *exactly* the way I wanted, but the one that's come closest so far is Picasa - close enough for me to buy it. It's not perfect, but it's *way* faster than Windows Explorer when you have 50-100 shots in a folder.

Since I bought Picasa, though, Adobe have brought out Photoshop Album which looks like it has some neat features. You might want to check that out. And I've heard good things about IrfanView, which has the merit of being free.

I just started using Adobe Photo Album too and as jenarom said, it's pretty cool. With the tags, you can pick any kind of category system and attach multiple tags to the same picture so that you can sort in a variety of different ways.

All the reviews I've read rave about Abobes Photo Album, it costs $49.95. I've read that Irfanview is the best for a free organizer. I try not to store my photos on my hard drive as they will deteriorate there faster and if your evil puter crashes you're in a bad way. Storing them on CD is best.

what I do not like with photoshop album if I understood well is that you have to 'import' the images, you really need to create an album.

That's why I am using ACDSEE to browse because it's using your live folder system to browse/display and it's very very fast.

When I tried photoshop album, I did not find an easy way either to display the photo fullscreen and browse them quickly .. acdsee you press page up/down .. and that's it

ACDsee has a calendar feature as well (fast as well).

I use Compupic 6.2 by Photodex, and really like it. Here's the page with the features -- you can do a trial download of this one too:

Thanks for everyones quick responses. I have a bit of experimenting to do now with the different programs. Just for information sake I am currently using PIESTUDIO, which was good initially because it renames the pictures as it retrieves them from the camera (I had it rename with the date and time). You can check it out here: //www.picmeta.com/piestudio.htm (evaluation versions avail)
The only part I dread is going through all my old photos and assigning keywords or descriptions, but I know I'll be glad once its finished. Thanks again.

I love my Mac!! But I do not use iPhoto anymore. Have not looked at the new one, cuz I am EXTREMELY happy with iView MediaPro.
Allows you to add captions, annotations, keywords, check all of your camera/picture info, and able to use more than just pictures. Supports tons of formats (does RAW, but unable to export to make web pages.
Also has batch processing to rename etc, make web pages, slide shows, text and contact sheets. Very exceptional!!

I know this isn't exactly what you had in mind, but using the "Image Information" function of Photoshop Elements and then the EXIF function from Irfanview (which has a "copy to clipboard" feature) you can include your comment/caption and copyright notice in your EXIF information.

Just a tip.
