I am in the market for a flash for the Rebel. I have seen so much about exposure comp with this camera and a flash. If I have $200 to spend, what is my best bet? I am leaning toward the Canon in this price range, the 420 EX I think. What do you all think?

Your best bet is to keep your eyes open for deals like this on Ebay. I have a couple of them and the are great! Just be sure you do your homework before buying on ebay - be sure to check their feedback - what types of items they sell - how often - and a huge change in trend in what they are doing - all could be red flags ...

Thanks. Everyone says that the 550 is the flash. I did not have the budget for it, but it sounds like I should wait until I do. No one has even addressed the 420EX in here or other forums. Not what I wanted to hear but what I expected. I did not even think of ebay for this one. Thanks again.

I have the 420EX, it is a capable performer, budget dictated this model rather than 500EX or 580EX. However, it will not disappoint you.

Look at the other options as well - the Sigma EF500DG Super 2 can be had new on ebay for $170 or so. It is comparable to the 550EX - it will even work with the canon wireless trigger system.

Many people coplain about the 550EX being unpredictible - it chooses fill flash or full flash all on it's own...i am sure this is a design feature that the users are not implementing well. user error so to speak. But enough people have mentioned it, as in pro wedding photogs, it is something to consider.

If you have the $$ for the 550, you can probably get a Metz 54. THe MZ3 version is fine with teh Rebel. THe MZ4 (the same flash, newer firmware) supports e-TTL2 as on the 20D and Rebel 350XT. I got one off ebay for $300, including the canon foot and a Lightsphere 2. The Metz 54 can be used with any camera - the foot (3102 for a canon) allows full e-ttl and other canon-specific functions. THe Auto mode on the Metz is just awesome, better the e-ttl in most cases.
