Let me be the first to congratulate you on your first ribbon! I am sure you have it bagged with that score. (well, not really sure, but that's a very high score for a 24 hour free study I think! Good luck! ...)

Doing well, I think. Certainly worth the $1.29 or whatever it was I spent on my tacks. I'm still left wondering how I would have done if I could have convinced my wife to pose nude with a pair of tacks on her nipples...

Robt.

Robt., 5.00 is middle of the road, 5.7 is pretty doggone good (at least for me)! Very curious about the comments though. Usually get about one for every 20 votes if the image is scoring well.

Actually, since there's no zero in scoring, middle-of-the-road is halfway between 1 and 10, which is more than 5 and less than 6, or (to be more precise) 5.5. So yup, I think 5.7 is middle-of-the-road. Actually, in terms of my OWN challenge entries this is looking like my 5th-highest score, which means I'm not even up to middle-of-the-road standards, on average... jejeje™

If you're going to do this, you should also lower the score for any photo about "tax" season, as the challenge only references "tacks"

The last time I got hammered for challenge description was for the 1970's challenge. Of course I entered a photo from 1970bc as the challenge didn't specify and got a ton of... "I don't get it" comments.

Picky! Picky! Picky! LOL! But you cannot enter a 5.5 vote and DPC voters seem to elect the low side of the option.

Another long week :(

I've only entered 2 of these challenges and I score fairly low. My first entry (last summer) came in last. For the current one I started at a little above 5.2 and am now a shade below 5. By the time it is over I will probably be about 4 or lower because the scores have steadily decreased.

I think my problem has been that I usually enter something offbeat in the hopes of being different. That is clearly NOT the way to go (not a knock on other entries more a comment on the fact that if I wish to enter these contest I should stop focusing on off beat entries.)

With that said, I think I will actually enter more of these challenges. While they score low I actually like thinking up different images in response to the challenges. I just might not choose to enter the more offbeat results.

This is true. My "outside the box" usually don't do quite as well. I've found that simplicity and sharp focus are usually the best bet. I think they universally go over better. Sometimes with the offbeat entries the titles get confusing, or cultural aspect are in play that many voters can't relate to and often don't understand. It's good to push the boundries as an individual photographer....but for a high rating on DPC, go with simple and straightforward for the most part. I went with one of my simplist entries ever for the Tack challenge. I'm getting my highest score ever. :) Crossing fingers for a top 5 finish.

I've entered what could be described by some, an "off beat" image, and getting hammered because of it. I don't think its a bad photo, and it meets the challenge criteria ... oh well ... sigh.

I am just trying to hold onto the brown ribbon.

Atleast I have more comments then I have seen from anyone else. That should be encouraging.

Yea! My first challenge, and I got above a 5! I'm savoring having an average over 5 while it lasts... ;-)

Thanks to some particularly helpful constructive comments, I was inspired to redo the shot the day after the challenge started:

Original as entered:

Improved (I like it better anyway):
