Definitely, Full Metal Jacket. I spent four years at Parris Island and the D.I. was spot on.

To answer your question after throwing FMJ into the mix unsolicited.

It's tough to say which is better between the two first choices. AN was very good...more Hollywood and dreamlike and DH is more of a character study. DH is hardcore and hyper dark.

Platoon was interesting until Charlie Sheen opened up his mouth. That dude really stunk up the place with that performance IMHO.

Kubrick....Full Metal Jacket....what else is there to say?

I was using quotes from the FMJ D.I. in a letter that I wrote just this morning. A very colorful letter I'd might add.

Well, full metal jacket was pretty realistic.

Although it takes place in WWII, Thin Red Line (1998) is another awesome war movie.

What about The Longest Day anybody think thats any gd???
04/15/2005 02:14:24 PM · #13
Ok war films..mm..right
not in any particular order

The longest day
We were Soliders
Saving Private Ryan
Full Metal Jacket
Appocalyse now
Deer Hunter
Platoon
Black Hawk Down

Just a few off the top of my head. I would be hard pushed to choose a favourite But if I was it would probably be The Deer Hunter

Full Metal Jacket really was a unique war movie. Kubrick is one of my favorites, and FMJ is the best psychological war movie. It shows how humans are brainwashed and turned into animals.

Platoon is the best Vietname war movie in my opinion

The Thin Red Line is the best WW2 film. It's slow and long but very poetic.

Black Hawk Down is the best as far as action goes, and it's the only war movie of Modern times.

Band of Brothers is expectianlly good in my view So was saving Private Ryan I havnt seen thin Red line but it must be hard pushed to beat those two

I´ll be the first to answer the question in the first post...

the Deer Hunter is one of the top 10 best films ever made, I relly love the russian roulette sceen where he shoots his brain out.. very dramatic, havn´t seen such a dramatic seen in a movie for years.

apocalypse now gets on the top 20, but I feel like it lacks something.. can´t see what though.
I havn´t seen the redux so I can´t comment on that, I saw the original back in the 70´s :)

Better who's to say? Only opinion's.

Now, Saving Ryan's Privates.....well, actually that was a porno staring Jenna Jamison. I'm getting confused.

What I meant to say was, Saving Private Ryan, IMHO was killer when it comes to action. The bullets wizzing by your head while sitting in the theatre, was totaly nuts.

Again IMHO, Platoon was great except for that little annoying thing, that we call Charlie Sheen. That was some world class, bad acting. IMHO.

I saw part of the redux and i must say the scenes that were deleted from the original release were deleted for a reason.

Some of my favorite war movies are
Apocalypse Now (original)
Thin Red Line
Tigerland
Full Metal Jacket
Bridge of the River Kwai
Lawrence of Arabia
Murphy's War
Dirty Dozen

Not particularly in that order.

Of the war comedies I would rate M*A*S*H (the movie) and Kelly's Heroes at the top of my list.

FMJ is my favorite war movie, almost like 2 movies in 1. One war movie that I really liked that is not your typical "war" movie was Crimson Tide. Not a lot of fighting action, but for acting Gene Hackman and Denzel were pretty amazing in that.

never saw the redux! Now that you mentioned that Martin ,Im gonna have to visit BestBuy and go buy it.

What Apocalypse Now has going for it is that it captured the surreality of that war. It's a very "literary" movie, in a sense, and was conceptually based on issues raised in Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness." (The central character in HOD is named Kurtz, btw...) It also has one of the great lines of all time: "I love the smell of napalm in the morning!"

Deer Hunter is grittier, more "real", and so in that sense it's a "better" war movie. Apocalypse Now transcends war movies IMO, so in that sense it's a "better" work of art. It's one of the great movies of our time, but I'd give the nod to DH as the better war movie.

I think Deer Hunter and the Thin Red line are the best. Deer hunter showed the downfall of a group of friends because of War. TTRL was more philosophical and poetic.

Or the line "The Horror". That was from "Heart of Darkness". When you watch the part where the boat comes into the fog or smoke as the arrows start to fly it is almost as you are reading Conrad straight from the book. The scene where they meet the photographer and all the heads are up on spikes is almost word for word out of the book.

You betcha :-) One of my favorite books. My screen saver is "scrolling marquee" and the text in it is "THE HORROR! THE HORROR!"
