Spots - What should I do? - DPChallenge Forums

Example:

Yesterday I noticed spots on pictures with a plain background. Today I changed the lens to see if it was the camera or the lens. They are still there.

What should I do? I am totally nontechnical so do I need to take it in to Canon (it is a digital rebel) or will any camera repair/store be OK? Unless it is really simple I probably shouldn't clean it myself.

I am going to Costa Rica in 3 weeks so I want (NEED) to have it back before then. Plus I will go crazy without my camera. It has really become a habit.

Keep it simple to start with. Remove the lens. Your manual will tell you how to lock up the mirror for cleaning - lock it up. With the camera lens opening pointing downwards, use a big puffer (the one shaped like a rocket, the size of a lemon, is good ) to blow away the dust. Turn the camera off and refit the lens. Take a picture with a high f number (the dust shows up more with a small aperture) to see if it has gone.
If not, you need to clean the sensor with cleaning fluid. You need to buy a box of swabs made specially for the job (Sensor Swab by Photographic Solutions inc $48!!! - mine came from Penn Camera)) and some cleaning fluid and follow the instructions on the swabs. If in doubt, get your dealer to do it for you.
I have cleaned both my EOS 300D and my EOS 20D this way - it does work but it is stressful.

I don't have a SLR but was wondering if anyone knows...My first thought was Canned Air to blow off the sensor but was wondeing if this is actually a bad idea due to the moisture that can come out of these...anyone know if that is a bad idea.

Bad idea, very bad idea - could ruin the sensor. Liquid is blown out which is very cold. You would blow the warranty - apologies for the punt!

I use an air compressor for an artist airgun it has no tank on it so no moisture can creap into it and i have a blower attachment on the end.. they are not cheap but way cheaper than sending it of to the makers or a repair shop. DO NOT USE CANNED AIR... it's not air its crap! you will screw your camera up.. invest in a small air compressor ( not the ciggarette lighter ones for the car) go to an art shop or maybe even a hardware store.. i got a med size one and i use it for all kinds of things from spraying to dusting even inflating the pool for the kids but its main job is keeping my cameras and lenses clean..

Glad I asked before I got my SLR and ruined it. Thanks for confirming my worries. (btw...Canned air is good for causing almost instant frost bite on any unsuspecting persons just in case anyone wanted to know, no I haven't done this but have heard rumors)
