I too am a newcomer this wonderful challenge/contest. I am very impressed with the caliber of photographers involved. Being new and seeing "contest" in the title...what's the prize? Personally all of your constructive comments is reward enough, but please be gentle - I am self taught.

Welcome, and expect a mixed bag like any other "public" site. Every week the best photos get some "1" votes, and the lowest-scoring usually get a "10" or two. Most comments are supportive and/or helpful, others are inexplicable.
I suggest you look through some of the archived challenges, pick photos you like (or don't), and see what folks said about them.
Lastly, decide if you are going to choose your subject/submission based on what you think people will like/vote up, or something strictly of interest to you about which you want feedback (and perhaps suffer the "consequences").

Welcome IGJOE!
This is a great site, I think I have learned alot...hope you will too. ou bring up a good point.... I wonder who in here has been self taught? I know I have a BA in Design from a College of Architecture, but not too sure about how that has helped my photog so far. Check out the thread on "How Did you Get So Creative". Good luck and keep shooting. I don't know where I heard this, but it is good advice: Try to do something photographic every day. I think that has improved my photog immensely. Have a good time.

hi, the prize is getting your image on the front page for a week and getting recognition. There is no material prize as such, but the prize you do get is worth much more.

You get many comments and critiques to help you improve, all of which may help you win in another competition. DPC isn't only about competing, its about learning and having fun!

Have a great time here :)

Hi Igjoe! Welcome to what will most likely become your favorite addiction! :-)
I was self-taught... until I came here. Now I am being taught by wonderful people who love photography, too.

Well put Karen (by the way, I think you were the one who gave me the above mentioned sage advice)

I took one photography class in high school, and most of what I learned was basic darkroom skills. It was really more like this site, an excuse to go out and shoot every week.

Most of my "learning" has come from a few good books, and Popular Photography magazine. I have also picked up some cool tricks from this site, one of which I am using this week to mixed results.

From the comments I am recieving this week, it seems we are all trying to leave better, more descriptive comments.

Good luck.

Well I'm a physicist and computer programmer by training. And a web designer and programmer by trade.

Some years ago I went into business for myself as a web designer and was told by a friend that I would never be artistic because 'sciencey' people just didnt think the same way as creatives. I decided to try and prove that it was possible to be good at both.

I'm a long way from what I would call good but I believe Im making progress.

Great line! Wish I could take the credit for it. I will remember it though.
Cheers!

Karen,

I have added you as one of my "favorites". I looked at your gallery (website) and I love the innocence of your subjects.

I'm also a newcomer (to this site and photography too). Although I have always liked photography, I finished shotting the typicals friend/family photos (of course with the subject perfectly centered, you can't waste your 12 pictures film doing odd shots :) But recently, when my son started to walk, I bought a videocam because I wanted to record those meravellous moments. I found a videocam that was capable of doing digitals photos and suddenly I became aware that I has what I laked before: the opportunity of shoting photos without the worry of waste film. Then I found the dpchallenge web and a new world opened to me. I hope that I can learn a lot in this site. This week I have made my first submission.

(Sorry for my english; it's not my mother tongue and it's difficult to me to express all that I want to say)

blackmouth,

Welcome, and have fun! It may take you some time to compose in English, but I don't think there's any problem with your ability to communicate your ideas. You will find a wide variety of styles and sensibilities here...and the diversity helps keep it interesting, if occasionally frustrating.
