Right now I'm just window shopping, but am interested in upgrading my tripod. Has anyone used this combination?

Any thoughts as to how well it will hold a D70 with a 70-200 VR lens? (again, not buying, but thinking about in the future..).

Thanks (would have searched the forums, but the search function isn't working right now)

The 3021Pro is a good tripod. I was strongly considering one. The center column is great for macro work. I went with the Gitzo 2220 because of the twist locks and a better implementation of the center column (but that's just my opinion). Played around with both at the store and felt the Gitzo was worth the extra cost.

I haven't played with the 488RC2 so I can't tell you. I tried the old hexagon Bogen QR plates and they kept moving around on me so I went with an Arca-Swiss compatible setup. I've heard from a couple people that the QR plates that come with the 488RC2 aren't as bad as the old hexagon ones, so as long as you're not doing anything too crazy you should be fine.

I have this combination, though it is called the manfrotto 190 pro in europe.

it´s a great tripod and head, I use it with my 20D and 70-200L IS f2.8 without any problems.

but if you are 6´or taller then this tripod might be a little short, there is anotherr manfrotto/bogen that is called the 055 in europe, and it´s almost a foot taller.

this is one heavy motha.. so don´t expect to carry it with you on a mountain hike, I´m going hiking in Italy next week and the tripod will stay at home.

I have this combination, and I like it very much. I second the weight. I am not a fan of carrying 9lbs of tripod/head for a long period of time.

I have this same tripod, but with the 3265 Grip Action Ballhead (I love this head by the way). No complaints, pretty sturdy. It is a little heavy, but the head I have adds a bit more weight than the normal ballhead.

I have the same setup 3021BPRO/488RC2. I'm 6'2". I don't think it's too heavy to hike with but I can see where some might. My SO, who hates to carry anything, will gladly carry this tripod because she thinks it looks so "bad ass".

I always have the battery grip mounted on the 10D. When using a short lens I mount the camera via the battery grip to the tripod and it's the perfect eye height. When using a long lens (ex Sigma 100-300 f4) I mount to the lens and it's about 2" lower than perfect.

As for how steady it is, mounted to the solid metal of a lens it is very stable. Mounted to the battery grip there is some flex because the battery grip is plastic. Still solid though. I would say the combination is a keeper.

This is my exact set up. The legs are plenty sturdy. The head is not quite as secure as I would like on my Sigma 50-500. For everything else it works fine. The QR system is easy and convienient. I have QR plates on each body and affixed to each collar.

A weight bag helps with stability (typically your camera bag).
