I have tried to submit my entry for the current challenge three times but each time the colour has been wrong. The image is saved as Standard Windows colour in the Save for Web box in Photoshop but comes up on this site looking 'Uncompensated'. Anybody got any ideas?

Try doing a "save as" rather than a "save for web" and see if that helps.

Yes, Save for Web is mainly for when you are creating a website where alot of simple graphics will be used, and quick loading is more important than exact quality. Do what club suggests and try Save As

I always use save for web, just make sure that it is set to a high quality setting. I believe the color bit depth is even adjustable. I have red that the web has a different color palette, so, that may be the problem. Good luck.

But, if the original file is a JPEG that could be causing the problem, and giving you too much compression. I always work in TIFF mode, and save for web.

Thanks, but no joy so far. Instead of using Save for Web to get the size of the file down (as I always have without a problem), I used the jpeg box this time after Save As. But the colours saved on my hard disk are just not appearing on the DPC site, so I'm still scratching my head....

Try reopening the DPC (less than 150K) version that you saved on your hard drive and comparing it with the one you saved. There should be no difference between these two versions.

I have seen problems in the past with differences in the way photoshop displays images compared with the way they are displayed in Internent Explorer also. In my experiences, the IE images have been darker than the photoshop versions... I don't know what causes it...

I get this problem every week also... everything I open in Photoshgop looks different than when it is opened in the internet window. It also looks different (A third change, not the same as either of the others) if I open it in another graphics program.

IE and Photoshop use different "Color Space" I do not understand it fully, but Photoshop is generally optimized for monitor display, or calibrated to match a printer, the web compresses colors a bit. There may be a way to get a browser preview. I am not on a PS equipped system right now.

After eight attempts to get the same colour/tone come out the other end, I give up. I tried making it brighter to compensate, and also chose a Mac colour setting in Save for Web as it was the brightest, but it never matched what I've got on my computer. The first comment I get that says 'this photograph is obviously too dark' will make me smile.

I don't remember whether it's available in earlier versions of Photoshop, but Photoshop 7 has a button to allow you to preview an image in your browsers during the "Save for the web" dialog. It's handy for seeing the differences before you commit to saving it.

You can also try opening the JPEG from the local file using the browser to see how that compares with the downloaded image, or if the browser itself is modifying the color.

graham--
this is certainly no definite solution, but a way that i found to get around problems i had back in the days when i had a really old camera and my monitor wasn't calibrated correctly-----i email the picture to myself before i submit it. then i submit it and check that against the emailed one. generally, they are the same, and i can go back and tweak in PS if need be. that doesn't help for printing of course, but at least my web photos are ok! i'm sure there is some vast technical explanation that would fix it better, but at least this is a way to get arround the problem for submitting! :)

Aha! When all seemed lost, I went to RGB Setup on Colour Settings and unchecked 'Display using monitor compensation' and my image immediately matched the one on site. I suppose that means that my monitor made it look brighter than it actually was. Anyway, after doing the editing again, the colour and tone are now the same at both ends.

Thankyou for all the helpful suggestions.

This is the first week Ive noticed a similar problem. My Negative space submission looks MUCH less saturated in IE than it does in Photoshop. And it's bugging the heck out of me. I've stried downloading the version that IE is displaying and I can confirm that it's the right version of the file - when I re-open the downloaded version in photoshop it has all the right colours.

So how can I make sure that voters see my image with the colours I intended? I accept that not everyone's monitor is colour balanced but this IE colour thing seems fixable.

A perhaps related problem is that my current submissions looks much more jaggy in the AOL 6 browser than in NetScape.
