Can somebody else give me copyright rights to their photo? |

Someone can license you to use their photo (including to post as stock), or they can assign the copyright to you outright. In either case, you better have somethng in writing, and in the case of copyright transfer or assignment you had better register it with the US Copyright Office.
As an example, I've uploaded a couple of my son's photos to Shutterstock; I have the right to administer his copyrighted materials as he's still a minor dependant. |

Can I offer a photo that has been exhibited locally? What if that image has sold prints? |

I had about 9 of my wifes photo's at Shutterstock (for a coulple of years) and never thought much about it, I even posted it in their forums then about 3 months ago my account was suspended, it took another month to get a reply from them as to why because my Forum access had also been suspended and when I sent a email via their "Contact us" link an automated reply came beck telling me to post my question in the forums hahaha snookered.
Any way I ended up deleting her photo's and my portfolio was reinstated.

AFAIK the only thing you couldn't do is offer any kind of exclusivity. For ordinary RM and RF photos it shouldn't matter how else they've been used.
If the prints were "investment quality" -- usually meaning numbered and with a promise of limited production -- it would probably devalue them for the photo to then be offered as stock, and I don't think I'd do that. But if it's an ordinary print sold at a craft fair (for example) and meant as a household decoration it should be OK. |

OK, so being new to Alamy is a lot like being new to DPC - I need to learn. So I have some questions for the stock veterans here:
What type of photos sell best? Models? Studio-like? "Woman in a business suit"? Or shots without people? Got any examples of shots doing well? Or - which shot from my portfolio would do best as stock in your opinion?
What editing do you do before submitting photos? NeatImage ok? Color adjustment? I assume cloning out spots is permitted, because Alamy says "no dust spots". Would you go so far as to remove a background? Or hide a piece of equipment?
Feel free to PM me or post here - I'd really appreciate any info!
Thanks,
-Jeff

Well, I found some info looking through Alamy and managing my images. They have a checkbox for "digitally altered", which they say to mean that it no longer represents the original scene, stating that some customers care about this, and it even includes too much saturation. So from that I assume that, if you check "digitally altered", you can go pretty hog wild.
I also found the contributors section of the site to be very helpful. Especially the tips from other photographers sorted by image types, an advice and tips section in the Alamy Blog, and a picture needs section of the blog.
In another thread, dwterry pointed to 10 Tips for Shooting Stock Photos That Make Art Directors Happy. Good info.
But I would still love any tips, suggestions, or links you all may have. Especially in the way of:
- what to shoot
- how to keyword effectively - what are the buyers searching for
- what shots of mine are stock-worthy, and why
Cheers,
-Jeff

Just noticed Alamy's new "measures". Shows how many views, clicks etc your images have and what key words customers used to find your image. Very useful stuff! |

I just got started with Alamy myself and I think the most important thing to remember is most of their sales are for editorial purposes. With that in mind, think news worthy pics or pics of things that may appeal to newspapers etc.

My understanding is that the alamy rank/measures is only influenced by alamys paying customers so hopefully this will prevent people from artificially inflating their rank. Only time will tell. |

When I click GO, nothing happens. Does this mean that while I've been holding my breath waiting for one of my four photos to sell, no one has even looked at them. sigh...

I would guess thats the case......or at least no current buying customer of theirs has looked at any of your images. |

Good luck! -- I finally got uploading enabled and sent in four shots, two years after I first registered with them. I'm second-guessing some of my submissions though ... :-( |

I waited 3 days for my first batch... then 21 days for my second. Looks like they attract the news folks with shining service. Of course, it makes sense, I suppose. I also read somewhere that they cater to their performers, which again makes sense for them.
emorgan - my measures page is blank also. I guess I'm in your shoes, too, though with only 4 images I guess that's expected! =) They could use a message like, "0 views/clicks" instead of just nothing. I don't think my shots are very editorial. =P

I finally took the plunge and submitted 4 shots to see if they would pass and 4 days later they did get accepted. Looks like I should expect 25 or more days for the second batch. |

Suddenly I have lots of views on my four little pictures and they weren't from yesterday - I think the counter thing just started working for me. |

My AlamyMeasures is still blank, but I've been "in the system" for less than 24 hours so I wouldn't expect any views on my initial 4 photos. This really could be as addictive as the update button! Photo views must only count from paying customers because I've previewed each photo to see how it looked and calculate some prices :)
