The files I sent in for evaluation included both hyphens and underscores in their names -- they were not rejected for that reason.

Thx Paul. I figured it must be ok, but since this disk is gonna have 100+ images I thought I would check.

I have just sent off 3 DVD's, which should boost my images on Alamy up to around 1700. With 4 sales last month, I'm hoping/wishing/fingers crossed that the sales keep increasing exponentially with each DVD I send in. My backlog on my digital images (from my 300D) is slowly decreasing to around 500, and the negatives left to scan is an estimated 2000-3000. Once I get that all edited, I hope to have about 4000 on Alamy by January 2006.

That reminds me, back to CS2... :-(

Wow, were talking serious image numbers here. I thought I was doing well with my nearly 400 at Shutterstock. I haven't even looked at my old prints.

4000 is a darn respectable number. I'm very interested to hear how well your sales average out in 6 months.

I havn't got near the image supply on-hand that you have, and it will be years before I can manage 4000 submissions! In fact, once I pared down my work (3 physical disks and countless partitions that took weeks to sort through) the sum core of RAW files I needed to take care of amounted to just over 1600 images. And not even a fourth of that is what I would consider suitable for stock. (Sometimes I wonder if I am editing my stuff too hard.)

So, my humble goal is to have a scant 300 images on Alamy by January. Still, I can concur that this business is a load of mind-numbing repetition in PS. Even after automating everything I could think to automate (love those actions) it still takes me a while to process and spot check each file, create the different sizes, etc... I keep telling myself that, one day, I really need to get serious about keeping the sensor clean :)

You folks are about two orders of magnitude over me in number of postable images, even if mine were big enough for these folks -- very impressive!

question! are you getting your sales in the form of royalty free or rights managed?

I am just getting started on Alamy and had my first submission CD approved. My question is, does Alamy reject images based on content or simply on image quality? I see many on there that are blurry or just not really great "stock" shots. Is the idea just to take as many shots as you possibly can and something will sell sooner or later?

Alamy is concerned about image quality.

However, I went to the Alamy meeting in NYC - they are getting ready to implement something called Image Rank. They are concerned about things like too many "similars" and images that are not high quality. I think over time you will see less of the blurry and low quality shots. I don't know how they are going to deal with image rank - but I suspect that images that get ranked poorly will show up on the last pages of a search.

I agree. I have seen some portfolios with about 30 of the same image from a photoshoot, all almost the same.

I have seen that also. Mary Ann - your stuff on Alamy looks very nice, good hi-quality stock photos. how long have you been on there and have you had any luck?

I have most of my images licienced as RM, solely because they are basically my travel images from the last 3 years travelling throughout the Middle East and Europe. I find myself loosely editing these shots because I have sold a few images I would have otherwise rubbish-binned if I had tightly edited them. I have currently an Excel spreadsheet tracking my sales and calculating average sales per 1000 images, average $$ per month etc. Thats always nice to see how well I am doing month by month. Even though I have only been with Alamy for less than a year now, I have found it's the best library to sell my images on.

Grant,

I believe someone asked you before, but how have you liked myLoupe. How has your experience there ranked next to Alamy?

Things seem to move a little slow there. My images have sat in the queue for a week, all keyworded and ready to go, yet remain unpublished. So I'm starting to wonder if the extra effort of their submission process is gonna be worth the time.

I've only had photos accepted at Alamy for about a month. I'm getting ready to ship my next set off - now that I've passed the initial quality control. Glad you like my work!

SInce I'm so new - no, I have not had any sales yet. Plus after the other things I learned in New York - I'm getting ready to shoot more "commercial" photos utilizing people around me (I hope - I've lined up my first "model" for next weekend.)

You have to click onto the pull down bar(in the edit screen) to check the images from "unpublished" to "published" in order to get them online to sell. Myloupe is just starting in the world of stock so I expect them to be slow for the time being.

Thx for the hint Grant, but it seems my images were still not past the quality review. I sent Brian a note about it, and he said the review had been backed up, but later that day they were published.

Grant, I'm interested in why you don't go for some of the more specialised travel stock sites? you've obviously got a great collection of travel photos...why alamy?

Good question.

I started with Alamy in Nov 2004, as a very new photographer and stock contributer. (I had only picked up a camera for the first time, 1 year before that). I wandered around photo forums before choosing Alamy after recommendations from a few people. I know (now) that there is many other more specialised travel image stocks out there, but I've invested many hours infront of the computer thus far, and really can't be bothered trying to start up another portfolio at another agency at this point in time.

The images I have on Alamy only record 1/4 of the total countries I have photographed, as most were taken on film with my other Canon. These are currently getting scanned..

I contribute to 4 image sites in total

* ALAMY.com
* MYLOUPE.com
* PhotographersDirect.com
* PhotoNewZealand.com

congrats on the sales wgf. I haven't had a sale in some time now...Mind you I don't have much for travel photography up there. I need to upload my latest shots.

I sent in a disc with 4 gigs of photos, Alamy received them on Oct. 14. Now they tell me they lost my submission, would I please resubmit! I sure am glad I kept the TIFFs I edited (HOURS of work). Just a word to the wise, don't erase your backup until you are sure Alamy has uploaded them.

Hmmm, it seems that Alamy's staff is under a bit of pressure lately....due to huge submissions coming in. Good advice "bri", backup everything!

yeah i NEVER delete my tiffs.

I keep my original raw files then edited the tiffs and name them the same as my raw file and save them in a 'stock photography' foler.

then i upsize the tiffs and save them in a different folder... and maybe delete the upsized tiff... but never delete the first edited tiff.
