For those interested in selling stock for more than pennies at a time. I was approved a month ago and only have 15 images on the site. I sold one April 1st for $300.

It was the pug. Best part is since it's rights managed, I know exactly how it was used and for how long...

Good deal. I hope to have 1000 images up by the end of June. I have 10 up now, another 165 waiting QC and 170 ready to go out at the end of the week. I'm buying a new scanner and would like to scan out my old slide files at a rate of 50 a week to send in. I have over 50,000 images on slides and film. At that rate I should have it done in about 20 years. Joking aside, I set 50 a week as a minimum goal and hope to have that project done in 5 years. All the while I will be sending in images as I shoot them.

Off of 10 images that have been up about a month? We can't all get as lucky as Brent. I really don't expect to be doing much in the way of sales until I have at least a few thousand images up. Anything in the mean time will be considered a welcome bonus.

Just finance the damn thing. You'll get it paid off quickly. Think of it as investing in your own business.

You don't really need a DSLR. Any good camera with 5Mp or better should work. Scanned images are also accepted.

If you've got a need for the features and can see a market, this is probably true. But probably 80% (approximate number plucked out of the air) of all the pictures you'll ever need to take, don't need a DSLR or SLR camera to take. I've sold images taken with a G2, for more than the price of that point and shoot camera, it doesn't need an SLR.

80% may be your number. I'd put mine at around 20%. The intended final product of my photography is printed large. But for Alamy, a good DSLR is definatly an asset, but not a requirement to get in.

The 80% figure I made up, is 80% of most all images taken. There are niches like sports and wildlife where an SLR is a huge advantage, but the majority of images don't need the extra flexibilty of an SLR system. There's certainly plenty of stock images being sold that don't have to be taken with an SLR

You dont have to pay unless you take a 75% payout and then you have to pay storage fees. You retain the option to sell your images elsewhere, but having them on shutterstock for 20 cents and Alamy for 200+ dollars probably wouldnt go down too well. If you're interested you may want to read their terms and a little more about the site.

But those are great 15 images. In their last newsletter they asked for animals in their want list. Congrats!

*Toys R US song in background*
" I don't want to grow up I'm a Toys R Us kid"

but in all seriousness... is it going to be safe to give them my or potentially my parents number?

Any time you give out the number it's a risk; you always should be able to verify that the company you give it to is reputable, and that you're actually giving it to whom you think.
IMO, it's potentially riskier to give your card to the gal/guy at the checkout than to use it on line. When you use the card on line, all you are giving out is the number and expiration date (and sometimes the code from the card). When you hand over your card at the checkout, you're giving them all this, plus a sample of your signature, and your physical appearance.

True True, Good post. How can I verify that this stock company is reputable? I am sure it is, but if I use my mom's card we will be in the 21 questions game

The point of the credit card is to provide proof of identity. You cannot use your mother's card to prove that you are you. You are just proving that you are someone with someone else's credit card. The other option is a utility bill and your passport but if you live with your parents then that isnt going to help you either. You could try and contact them and explain your situation, but it looks like you'll either have to get your own credit card or look at other agencies.

I'd suggest that it's time that you began to develop a good credit record. Having a credit card and using it very responsibly is one good way to start.
Use it like a checking account, don't purchase anything you cannot pay for immediately. Always pay your balance in full every month.

uhhh...I don't remember ever giving my credit card number to them. Your mailing address or a bank account number to direct deposit your money into is all I did. They are very reputable by the way. they are one of the best stock portal sites out there and are highly recommended by the ASMP.
