I recently bought a camera on Ebay with no serial #, it broke & no one would fix it-thinking it was stolen. I found out later it's part of a "grey market." They're cameras made for other countries & sold in those countries for real cheap. I don't know if it's legal to sell them in the US, but they have no warranty.

Hi
I just bought a Canon 350D from a friend. He doesn't have the box anymore, and the serial number is not on the camera. I need it for the insurance, and I got a good deal, so I don't want to five the camera back.
Is there some other way I can get the serial nr????

My 20D didn't have a serial number on it, (wasn't partial, wasn't rubbed off - there DEFINITELY was NO serial number), and it was purchased through Best Buy right here in the USA. I called Canon, and they said that though it SHOULD have the number stamped on it, it didn't matter because the serial number is embedded in the camera software, and all warranties would be honored.

I eventually had to send it to Canon for work twice, and it was, indeed, covered under warranty. Canon seemed to think that there was some kind of glitch in their stamping method, as cameras occasionally come through with a blank stamp.

You can still register your camera with Canon using the serial number that you found on the EXIF.

Check the previous posts in this thread about reading the exif data in an image from the camera, or using the communications software to get the info out of the camera directly.

In the US you can sell gray market, but the manufacturer does not have to honor the warranty.

So glad im not the only one whos Canon camera has no serial number. Only had mine about 6 months and it got dropped about 3 days ago and the casing cracked. Its a massive weight of my mind knowning the serial number is intergrated in to it.

Thanks

LOOL.

SDW65, Thanks, but 800 numbers don't work from Germany.
I'm sleeping well now, so as far as I'm concerned the problem is solved.

Obviously you don't need it for this, but a handy tip for the future: Skype will allow you to call US/Canadian toll-free (800/888/877/866) numbers, or the equivalents in many other countries, free of charge. See //www.skype.com/intl/en-us/features/prices/payg-rates/#viewAllRates for details.

Now... if I could just find some way to send that URL back to April 2005... Flux Capacitor?

My 40D has a 4 digit serial number instead of 10. All the technicians says it's really odd, and that it's not the number, but there's definitely not any numbers missing, scratched out, faded, etc.

But if you look in the exif, the serial number has absolutely nothing to do with the 4 numbers on the bottom.

That's good to know.
I haven't needed it for a few years now, but now at least I know this trick.
Thanks.

It's not dead! I still own that camera.

Also some of the posts from today are about similar problems.

Or just automatically lock threads that have been inactive for a certain period of time.
