I have so far only voted on nearly twenty percent of these but am so far very impressed!! I think this will be a high scoring challenge!

Except for my which is tanking at a 4.6, but that's ok considering what I see as competition and I didn't have especially high hopes for this one.

Looking forward to voting on the rest!!

I too am tanking...my pet shot made my Top4 on my portfolio page, but this one is not gonna make it there at this rate.
4.5 with 24 votes, no comments. My dog shot did 18 comments, the 4th highest for me in 30 some odd challenges.

I think (hope?) this is a low scoring challenge...I thought my pic would do better. Tough to get a motion blur shot on a sunny day without an ND filter, so there is a spot that is a tad blown out, the DOF is WAY deeper than i like, but hard to select it and blur it.

I must admit I'm a little disappointed.....I didn't use a sport shot which I knew would make up the bulk of the entries. When you think about it Extreme action has many interpretations and my submission portrays it well, the score is low but bumping up towards 5. Or maybe the subject matter is an issue to some people and I'm getting scored low because of it and not the quality of the photograph........
I think in future I'll go common thoughts and I might be up there instead of stepping outside the circle to be a little different.

A lot of times the high scoring challenges alternate with lower scoring ones. As Pet Portraits scored so high it would be reasonable to expect Extreme Action to score lower. But the voters are full of surprises so don't give up hope.

I knew that my photo wasnt going to do well, subject matter + presenatation + level of depth, but I entered it anyways for the hell of it... Im sitting at a 4.3 right now with no comments and 1 favourite, so the least I can say is that at least someone else besides me got it.

if you like your picture that's what matters...dont try to take shots just to place well, use this as a place to learn and improve your own style....rewards will follow ....creativity is always a good thing

um.. I can't say anything about my shot without giving it completely away.

5.03 for now..

I'd like to reiterate that the description says "with or WITHOUT motion blur".. so I'd like to remind people to keep that in mind.

(Not for my sake though, but for some great photos in this challenge without motion blur that I'd hope get scored on par with the ones with it)

Exactly. Anyone that follows my challenge entries would be quick to learn that I much prefer to have fun. heh

I agree! You better have fun amd like your photos and not worry as much about it's score.
But in any case, just from a very brief look at those action shots, some real great photos there! Real stunning work, people!

Is the photography stunning? Or is the action shown stunning?

i found a bit of both. and i would find it a shame to see this wind up as a low-scoring challenge. unfortunately, this type of shot ('extreme' action) is easily dismissed, until someone attempts it on their own. given how few entries there are, it's a fair bet that not too many people have really attempted this type of stuff, and hence, it will become a low scoring challenge.

btw, coolhar, sorry you couldn't make it down saturday.

I had an entry all planned for Extreme Action, but ended up sitting out because I wasn't happy with the few shots I got. Had I started earlier in the day, I might have had better luck with the lighting, and I needed another person to toss clothes. :-(

This is the first time, I´m not really agree with my score. I hoped to do very well with my entry, but voters have another thoughts, which is very respectable.

Is gonna be a low score challenge?

That's great! You're a chicken for not entering it. I'm hoping to grow some creativity through osmosis with people like you on this site. I'm so boring I couldn't think of anything to do for this.

Gotta say the entries are great, I voted mostly 8, 9, & 10's.

Geez! Don't you love it when somebodys OUTTAKE blows your entry away! ;^) Cool shot as usual Shannon...

I thought about entering something like one of these into extreme action, but thought it would not be the voters definition. I took these last night at Bowfire, the Riverdance inspired "fiddle" show. Comments welcomed and appreciated.

i think both shots are really stunning and full of color, but i like the second one better becasue the blurriness shows that the musician was the object in motion.

the other way that you can show an object in motion is to have the moving subject stopped whaile the background is blurry from panning to follow the movement.

IMO when the subject and his/her surroundings are veryy blurry due to motion it looks sloppy and borders on looking like someone needs to use a tripod.

sorry if that is nieve (as i am not a professional) but that is how i look at it
04/11/2005 11:08:30 AM · #20
The first one too much motion - perhaps if the feet were included (I take it there's some dancing going on?) and only the dancer is blurred.

The second one is cool - for me the fiddler would need to be more of the focus (too much non-contributing in the image - crop out left).

Do you have any close-ups of the fiddler (upper torso and the fiddling (sp?) action)...that would have been the best IMO.

Aight.. I just went through and voted on them all, and gave 27 rare Artyste comments.

If you got one, feel lucky. We all know how valuable I am here.

LOL.

yah.. right.

Thx for the comments.

Yes, I agree on the second; that's basically an unprocessed upload. I would crop--though the problem is the guys legs standing behind him. I'd have to spend some time cloning them out.

The first was indeed a dancer; I have his legs, but his black pants and the stage are drab, and to me this was about color and motion, like my blurred flower shots, so I cropped. I thought it might have been enough to capture the torso movement and the fairly still face and let that "explode" in the color, but perhaps it doesn't work this way.

I took lots of slow shutter speed shots of them playing. But of course, most of them move their bodies and heads while playing too! (Not to mention I was on the balcony, full zoom, on my S1 with IS on at ISO 200 (no tripod).
