I've noticed that most ribbons go to people using
the most popular high end cameras, (canon 300d, nikon 70d, nikon 100d,
canon 20d, etc,). I'm sure this is because talented amateurs (and pros)
gravitate towards the best tools our craft has to offer.
But I just thought it would be interesting what would happen
if we were restricted to 2 megapixel cameras or less. Would the top
photos look as good as previous challenges? Who would come out on top.
Won't that require more creativitiy? Let's find out!
What do you say?

I'd say have at it. I don't have a camera under 3.3MP anymore. Seems like you would be limiting the field to few people, but it might not be unlike the "No-Ribbon Winners" challenge - I liked that idea!

Couldn't the same people with the same high-end cameras just shoot in a lower resolution? Then what would be the point? We would just end up with some really great pictures that were too small to utilize in the ways we've been using the bigger files.

I think his proposal would specifically require lower-res camera models.

Fairfield20,
I think it would be a great idea because its quite challenging to acheive professional photos with low resolution cameras..
not much technical options, almost everything is on auto modes like autofocus. no real controls on depth of field, apertures, shutter speed and flash systems, long reaction time and lag of the camera.
Everything is really restricted!
I'm working with my 2MP for the moment, planning to go DSLR soon, it will be the D70.

If I had a DSLR, I would have participate in the challenges already but its quite difficult to acheive a good standard with a poor compact.

Dude, jump in on the challenges - you really only need to have it look decent at 640px and I looked at your gallery and many of those shots look competitive. Can't hurt to get yer feet wet - and imagine if you won a ribbon with a 2MP camera.

Unfortunately, megapixels in and of themselves don't limit you much at the size we are posting, especially with PS capability of sharpening and smoothing. You'be very hadr-pressed to tell the difference between my 3.2 fuji and my 5.0 Nikon, for a weak example. I have to blow them up really big to see a difference, and most of THAT's accounted for by better optics on the Nikon.

When you consider that even in the lower-resolution realms of point-n-shoot cams there's a huge variation in price/sensor quality/optics, I don't really see where this makes much point.

Perhaps a challenge restricted to a limited range of focal lengths (24-35 maybe) and out-of-the-cam shots in jpg mode with NO photoshop (or other) adjustments but rotation 90 degrees allowed would make some sense, I donno. It's been suggested before though.

This simply isn't true...there have been several ribbon winners and high placers from cameras in the 1-3 megapixel range. You are only limiting yourself with this argument. Go ahead, enter the challenges. You might be surprised at your results. The resolution capabilities of your camera as well as it's ribbon-winning potential are only limited by your own imagination and creativity. Like Robert said, at the small size which we submit images for voting, it's difficult to tell which photos are 2MP and which are 8MP.

Come on in, the water's fine!!! ;o)

how about restricting the challenge to cameraphones, most of them are under 2Mpixels and everyone got them :)

I have a 14 megapixel DSLR, but I honestly don't find the megapixel aspect of the camera to be a big advantage on this web site. I sometimes get artifact when I reduce the image to 640 pixels. My camera however shoots at 3 megapixels if I want, so I could enter. I don't think the images would look any different on this site with 14 or 3 megapixels. I do find 2 advantages of the DSLR. The 14 megapixels makes a big difference when making large prints compared to lower megapixels. The second advantage is using high quality Nikon lenses with the DSLR. The lens advantage always matters in my opinion.

This site in my opinion is not about megapixels, but about composition, lighting, background, and meeting the challenge. You can do all that with 1 megapixel.

hi Fairfield

megapixel are not in connection whit how good or bad photographer you are.

Its not the mega pixels or the camera that wins ribbons. It the big human attached to it.

This is so true you can't tell a difference in the size that we post here.

Not everybody. I haven't found much need for a cameraphone yet. :)

doesn't seem fare to me. What about a DSLR only challenge. It would be cutting half the users out. IMO

I think it should be 3MP or less :) just so i can participate but would my camera qualify since it says 3.2 MP? I mean its still 3 lol

I really like this idea
