Coming from a computer graphics background, we did several tests at my former workplace and CRT beat LCD hands down. LCD's were "sharper" looking based on pixel size, and it's a "fun", "cool", "neat", "convenient" technology, but color accuracy & consistency was a major problem.

LCDs are great for text based software and such, but the general rule, AFIK, is that CRTs are still the standard for anyone in graphics.

Yes, quality will vary from one monitor to the next... we were basically testing hi-quality CRTs vs. hi-quality LCDs. Any cheap monitor can be a crappy display.

19" crt at home with Radeon 8500 video card...but when I've used the crts at work or the lcd's, the photos I've seen appear a lot darker...I think people with older monitors are seeing darker images if what I'm seeing at work is correct.

Good quality crts are starting to disappear from the catalogs and store shelves. I use a 19" Trinitron (Sony)CRT that calibrates very nicely. But I think I want a spare just in case they disappear completely!

LCD, 15"

I'll never go back (except at work where I'm stuck with that 19" CRT).

17" Flat screen CRT (Sony!) Works nice but i'd like a LCD.

I wouldn't use an LCD monitor to do ANYTHING to do with photography except of the Eizo or Lacie $$$. If you own one don't vote!

Your statement may be a bit broad considering what is currently on the market. You seriously need to try a ACD. I have a high quality ViewSonic Graphics Series CRT whose quality pales in comparison to the ACD. I have no problem with consistency with the two ACDs that I own.

I agree...without calibration all one has is subjectivity. Software calibration is better than no calibration, but hardware is by far the best. I use a Pantone Colorvision Spyder.

Definitely CRT for all my editing work, though I sometimes do use the LCD if I run short of time for voting.

I have a new 22" CRT at home, and a new 19" LCD at work.

I have found I now prefer the LCD for normal work, general office stuff, but being able to compate both I am more of the opinion than ever that the CRT is better for photo work.

At home I run 2 CRT's, but good quality, but one 17" one 22" which is a pain. I think my idea at home would be dual monitors but have the second screen, for general web browsing, e-mail etc, as a LCD. The only pain there though is it would not save me the desk space that LCD's save, as I would need to bring it forward to align with this flipping monster 22" CRT.

CRT vs LCD? The argument may end up resolving iteself in the near future. I posted this on another thread a few days ago but here is what Tim Grey, the PS and tech guru, has to say on LCD's when asked in a recent newsletter:

I need to buy a new monitor and you have mentioned that CRTs will soon be a thing of the past. What would you suggest for a professional photographer using photoshop?

==========

CRT monitors will indeed be a thing of the past very soon. Many manufacturers have already stopped making CRT monitors, and more will stop by the end of the year. That means replacing your monitor with an LCD display when the time comes, and there are no shortage of excellent displays.

My favorite LCD monitor right now is the Sony PremierPro 23". It is a gorgeous display with excellent dynamic range and rich colors. I love using it. I also still like the Professional series monitors from ViewSonic, and I've been happy with the displays from Mitsubishi, and am impressed with the higher-end Samsung SyncMaster displays. Of course, the challenge is being able to evaluate LCD displays based on written specs, and I just don't consider that to be a viable solution. Instead, I strongly recommend that you evaluate the monitors in person by viewing photographic images on them. There are a variety of stores that have a relatively large number of LCD monitors on display for you to evaluate so you can get a better sense of what you're getting before you buy.

Gotta agree there, its a huge surprise to me to. I thought CRT would win hands down.

Well, (bottom end) LCDs are cheap, trendy, and the default for most off the shelf packages. Also a lot of people will use laptops.

I'm surprised that they're *so* close (1 vote in 500!), but not that there's a lot of LCD usage.

I use a lcd, as my computer got a virus and went to computer heaven. So we got a laptop from dell, and I use that for everything.

When I started at Tektronix I worked in the color CRT group, there were a lot of people that asking why we were working on CRTs since they would not be used by anyone within 5 years, this was in 1984.

Their end will come in time but who knows when.

BTW I use a LCD now, sort of feel bad about it but I don't have much room on my desk.

I have a 15'4" LCD laptop with the magnificant 1680x1050 Screen Resolution

I will never go back to a CRT, you can't imagine how nice it is

I used to have LCD and now I aquired CRT. CRT is much better. the colors are easier to adjust to the print colors, so i print what i see. LCD has different colors, and mostly they show different gamma. Maybe, my LCD was bad?:(

The monitor makes a huge difference. My home computer is a mac with a great big lcd that has vibrant wonderful color. My work computers were crts with dull dark and awful color. I tried never to vote from work. Ann

While I agree in part with the notion that CRTs show graphics better, I find it depends greatly on the monitor itself. I use a few different computers at work - all with LCD monitors... and all have different quality of graphics. But the same is true of CRTs... an old CRT will be dim and somewhat less sharp.
I can say conclusively that, except in extreme (travel) circumstances, I will not vote on my laptop... but the LCD at home has as good a picture as my old CRT, and since it sits farther from my face, I can see the picture more clearly.

I am just curious as to how many people actually calibrate their display. Based on some recent comments that I have gotten my guess is that many people do not. Maybe that would be a good topic for a poll?
