This was my first challenge so I'm pretty happy with my score. My goal was to score above a three. I still have a lot to learn, and this site is proving to be quite benificial.

I've gotten 23 comments, all of them great and even 2 favorites, but it doesn's seem to be showing in the score I'm getting. My photo nails the theme, lighting/focus/comosition-great, and is funny to boot, but people are obviously still giving it an relatively average score. What gives? This is my second challenge so I'm kind of new.

Im very happy with the score so far it has been higher but the 10 comments and 1 favorite has put the smile on my face I think this picture was 1 of my best and my PB is 6.2 so it may prove to BE mt best yet I shall wait and see its still early enough to beat that.

Those are pretty good stats for your second challenge. Some people have NEVER done that well.

Thanks. I'm not trying to boo-hoo. There are a lot of great photos that get just average scores and even the highest rated ones that are perfect in every way seem to end up with some low votes too. It seems to me there are alot of grumpy trolls. It seems people are grading on a curve rather than on each photo seperately.

Fully agree with you there... I had last four votes drop my rating by a full .5 points.

i sure can't get enough of

"let there be light photos" -- shot right into the sun.
&
"budding life" -- any sort of budding plant.

in a challenge i thought would have been overwhelmed by baby photos, i find it seems to be the least photographed.
perhaps everyone was trying to think outside the box but only ended up thinking in a new box.

____edit____
the photos that are good can't be changed, i will still vote them as high as i would if there were only one budding flower. just wanted to make that clear.

perhaps we should retire the phrase "out of the box" for DPC.

I've been as low as 5.0 and as high as 5.8. I think anybody who is solidly above 6.0 in this challenge is easily in the hunt for a ribbon. I doubt that the top three scores are going to be near 7, given what people have been sharing in this thread.

Like strangeghost I have also seen 5.0 and up to 5.9. But now I've been right around 5.3/5.4 range for awhile now. And I am happy with that score now that I have seen the others posted in this thread. I did see a lack of originality in this challenge, but even I thought I was being original only to end up sharing the idea with a handful of others as well. =o

Weirdest result I've ever seen... I have 15 comments (13 of them glowing), yet the score is only 4.2617. It'll be interesting to compare the commenters' score to the overall score.
03/31/2005 11:37:22 AM · #165
It must surely be a joke. It doesn't make sense anymore.
Or could it be because of different interpretations? Looks like there are 3 or 4 groups in the challenge. Hope they aren't clashing.

Probably a joke by the admin for april fools day. :) then again, this is DPc, so scores can vary quite greatly from what you think it should be getting. There is no rationale to get a bunch of 10's and 1's in the same challenge :)
03/31/2005 12:00:26 PM · #168
I recall the earlier post to this thread about the amusing (ahem) April Fools joke put on by the admins last year. Is it possible we're being "fooled" again, and that tomorrow evening, the joke will be revealed and all our scores will rise by 1.0 or more??

Doesn't help you as much Shannon. I suspect I know which entry is yours, but if I'm right, I can't understand the your score unless you're been beaten down by a different kind of troll.

Unlikely. This one isn't really an interpretation issue as far as meeting the challenge, but you DO have to actually look at it. Now up to 16 comments with words like "speechless, genius, wonderful, fabulous, awesome..." The comments simply don't match such a low score.

Normally I'd be first in line to say, "Well it's your job to communicate the concept," or "maybe they just don't like it," but I honestly think this is a case of many viewers just breezing through and not looking. I'm not really complaining, just bewildered. ;-)

:)

ps ... i'm one to talk, holding a solid 5.3 in the challenge where my shot should be.

Nah. I've seen people threaten to leave the site, and throw verbal tantrums that go on for days (the voters are stupid, nobody knows what good photography is, blah, blah, blah). I'm pretty sure I know why my score is low, and it surprises me. The comments tend to back up my theory, but I'll find out for sure at the end.
03/31/2005 01:16:05 PM · #173
OK, my theory is that the admins are in fact having an April fools joke on us, and have turned the scoring on its head for this challenge. In other words, if a voter gives your image an 8, it is calculated as a 3, if they give you a 1, it is computed as a 10, and so on.

So, if your score is on the low side of things, take heart, you'll get a reprieve when the April Fool's joke is revealed. If you're currently getting a high average, you're about to be let in on a cruel secret, you're really bombing.

You must have cheated and taken a photo of Oregon Coastline rocks at sunset again..
I'd ribbon a lot if I lived down there.. that's it, I'm moving.

*edit* please take this in the tongue-in-cheek manner in which it was intended.
