My photo bombed & deserved it, but here are a few that I thought should have ranked higher...

50th place

85th place

101st place

Here are some of the ones I thought should have placed a lot higher than they did:

These first two did well, but I had hoped to see them in the top 10...
, 15th place
, 16th place

These next two I *know* are out of place because they are far better than the one I submitted, yet they placed well below mine:

, 52nd place
, 46th place

These three should have finished higher up in my view:

should have been a top 15 not 37th

at least a top ten

now this should have ribboned I added it to my favourites as soon as I seen it.

85th place I liked this shot, the cut off right hands a bit of a tech flaw and I wasn't sure what, who or where the guy was. Mardi Gras, Gay Pride...or just a Super Freak?

101st place
Generally, I prefer flowers in color as that's the essence of their beauty. Why take something with such stunning, pure, natural appeal and flatten it? Maybe I'm wrong about that.

The geese and Nico Blues Sex Sells I picked to ribbon or at least top 10, Sex Sells being my favorite of the whole Challenge

Just kidding. I took this on Friday and didn't enter anything in the challenge.

Thanks for the comments on my photo!
Here's the entry, the colour version, and the original (autoequalised).

Still think the colour is better folks?

The funny thing about my image is this:

I took the photo over the weekend and submitted it sunday night from home. On my home monitor (1600x1200 resolution) it looked great.

I got into work the next morning and looked at my submission and thought OMG, it's a disaster. It looked way oversharpened on my work monitor (1920x1600 resolution).

So I go home and look there again and it looks fine.

So I guess the moral of this story is... check your image on different monitors before you submit it!

I noticed a lot of photos had been "finished" with a border or other processing. While stock agencies like objects isolated against a white BG, they generally prefer (demand) images such as this fine landscape to be submitted without the border -- that decision is up to the designer who downloads the image.

But stock agencies don't accept images that are 640px max either, do they?

I don't see that as relevant to the issue of borders. Subject, composition and lighting are the only really critical issues, although you have to make allowance for some loss of sharpness due to the smaller size.

I have a few questions about my entry, if you guys don't mind some after the fact critiqueing.

This was cropped to death. In the original you could see the whole glass and even and inch or more of the green/yellow backdrop I made. After color correcting and all I was surprised that it was at all useable and not pixelated to hell.

Question: Is there anyway to do this well with out a macro lens(I used the D70 kit 18-70mm)and in terms of order do you crop first then adjust or the other way around. Is there any best order to do PS things in general?

Second question:Do you think the border hurt me in the voting? I thought it might but I liked how it brought out the colors. I hoped the public wasn't going to be too harcore on that front though I knew it was a no, no.

I'd say a ~6.4 is a very respectable score, especially in a tough competition like this one so I doubt the green border hurt you much - even though I'm not that fond of the border.

As for how to take macro-pictures without having a macro lens you basically have two options:
a) get an extension tube
b) purchase a closeup diopter filter.
Either option will give you the option to take pictures of subjects much closer to the camera with your current lens and will run you less than $100.

Hey thanks agwright-now if I had pressed the far right button, all I see is writing the word thumbnail with the #..will it show up when I post?
And not to take away from this post, the previous shot was just my favourite from the challenge, maybe not in meeting the challenge, but I find it so striking that I figured someone would want to use it, I would.

Steve, Great shot for such an old dude (bio says 83)! Your shot made my top tier, and I scored it an 8. Personally I didn't much care for the border, in fact all through the challenge I preferred to see non-border shots since this challenge was for stock photography as noted above, but I didn't deduct because of it. I would have guessed you would be close to top 10.

83 was the oldest selection offered by the dropdown choices. I think, I might be 42 about now.

So you're the bastard that gave me that "8". Boy that really pisses me off. You and that guy that gave me the "1" better hope that we never meet in a dark alley.

Kidding, of course. Glad you liked the shot.

I certainly agree that the stock agency wouldn't want the border. In fact, if I were to print one of my images, I would NOT include the borders I use when displaying the image on a computer monitor.

But the thing is ... I wasn't giving the image to a stock agency. I was putting it up on the site to be viewed and voted upon. And for that purpose, the border felt appropriate.
