hey all, this is a reminder to leave comments for people. i'm trying to leave a comment now for every single picture. remember even if you can't vote for all of them in one sitting, you can spread them out over the week. constructive comments are the most valuable thing on this site!!

Still waiting on your comment for my picture :) Btw, thought your 'phi' picture was excellent - should have won, IMHO.

It seems like the higher a photo is rated, the more comments it gets. Although I normally end up commenting on every photo, I always start out commenting on the ones I rated low first. I wish others would do this as well. The lower rated photos need comments more than the higher rated photos.

I agree, I am trying to make comments especially on the shots I rate lower, with a suggestion for how I think it would be better. I do find myself wondering though if people might think who is he to suggest improvements. What do you guys think. Do you want constructive remarks?

Yes please! I think anyone who puts their pictures up here would be very happy to get constructive remarks. What you like, what you don't like, what works, what doesn't.

I've seen some comments that are just pointless though, looking through the archives.

Honestly, I like pretty much all comments with any content (that is to say not "this rules!" or "this sucks!"). Tell me what you think. Tell me what you do like, tell me what you don't like, or tell me how you think it could be improved.

One thing, though, if people think there is a really obvious flaw, I think they should occasionally refrain from pointing it out unless they want to mention how to get rid of it. There are a couple of photos in the previous challenge which have gotten 10+ comments all saying the same thing. If it's amazingly obvious, you can pretty much bet that someone else will say it and/or the photographer already knows about it.

This is my first challenge (stop motion), and I appreciate everyone's comments! Thank you! I am still learning my way around the site... how do I respond to comments regarding my photo? I didn't feel confident yet to comment on other photographers photos while voting for the curves challenge. I will build my voting stamina. Thanks again. I am learning just by reading your forum remarks... I look forward to further critique on my photos to grow, and am excited to participate again!

Click on the name of the person who commented. It will take you to that person's user page. Then click on "Undisclosed" or "PM" in the email section of their user page to send a private message.

they do, but like stepping on a puppy, no one wants to hurt anyone else's feelings ..

ACTUALLY, I kind of forced myself to get over that and be honest, and I ended up getting a scathing letter from someone who was appalled that I could be so dense as to miss the sublime curvature and concept in their photo. sigh .... :P

As someone taking photography seriously for the first time in my life, the comments have mostly been very helpful. Though, I have to admit the first time I submitted a photo I had to learn to take them as constructive help, not criticism. I am trying to also learn on how to critique the photos, and hope to be able to comment on most of them this time.

I just made a brief observation that I would like to share.. I'm sure that some have already noticed this. When it comes to commenting on photos, the higher ranked photos in the 'curves' challenge are all getting more comments than the lower ranked photos. There is a significant difference in the number of comments between the first place photo and photos ranked at 50 and below.

Am I wrong in assuming that a good percentage of people who comment are only commenting on photos they like? It's just an observation... If someone didn't like my photo, I would love to know why so I can improve on my next shot. I don't mind the comments like "dude.. that's awesome!" but really like the comments that make me re-evaluate the way I composed a photo. I won't always agree with them but it will make me think about it next time I'm composing a photograph.

I have also seen a few photos here that I feel need no criticism. When I see those, I make sure that I say that I can't offer any suggestions for a better shot.

Jm, I think many of the voters could learn a lesson from your methods of commenting. Maybe you ought to sign up to give the lesson on how to critique a photo.
04/18/2002 07:47:47 AM · #16
I'm no expert in the methods of commenting... I'm even further from being an expert in photography in general... I just like feedback so I give it when the opportunity is there...

I'm probably not qualified to make comments, but if there is something in a photo that I think could be done to make me like it more, I'll say so. Sometimes I've got no idea why I really don't like a photo ... it just doesn't grab me.

"Bring 'em on" I say. If I only get one comment about a flaw, then it could just be that voter who has a problem with it. Plus if everyone tells me the same thing, it might just stick in my head the next time I press the shutter :p

Not real helpful to anybody is it? It's similar to someone saying "it sucks".

Constructive criticism (sorry for the cliche) is what I'd prefer to see from the voters
04/18/2002 08:03:51 AM · #20
Well, if it doesn't GRAB you, that's not like saying it sucks. It's telling the photographer that there's nothing interesting in the shot. I think that comment would be fine, IMHO.
04/18/2002 08:09:11 AM · #21
oh well. I guess I'm trying to get through as many comments as possible and those photos will be last. Doesn't mean that the good photos get comments first - I comment in a fairly random order ... picking a thumbnail something from my voting page when I think of something right/wrong

As time passes, I'll feel more confident in analysing a picture and comment more ... at the moment I'm struggling enough with my own shots :)

On the topic of commenting, I find myself, through no carefully devised plan, commenting first on the pictures to whcih I give the highest AND lowest scores, and then working towards the middle from both ends. I guess this is because if a photo elicits in me either a strong positive or negative response, it easier for me to articulate this than if I am just so-so about a photo and giving it a 5 or 6. Again, not a specific plan, just find myself doing that.

I can see where, in the not-so-distant future, if we begin to recieve well over 100 or even 200 submissions per challenge, then commenting on each will become a challenge in and of itself. This will mean less time to thoughtfully evaluate and comment on each photo.

I managed to get my voting and comments done for the current challenge in one day... I think I can manage a few more...

Same here, took about an hour to go through and vote/ comment on every picture. I'm sure people will not like some of the comments though :)

Hmm, about 40sec per picture...
04/18/2002 08:45:39 AM · #25
I prolly spent about 5 or 6 hours with it...
