I just entered what I believe to be a respectable shot for the Cemetary Challenge but I'm not terribly confident that it will do much.

Being on sacred ground I found it tough to be creative but I did my best for what I had. I still have a fear that there will be lot's of sameness to the entries and that subtle differences will get lost in the hummmmm. I also bet a PS wizard could have added a bit more drama to my shot and that's where my or other images will be trumped in the end. Unless somebody actually staged something cool? Ravens? Smoke machine? Hmmmmm.

Anyone having strange vibes about what they are entering? Any thoughts in general about you'll be looking for?

As I was making my rounds I came across a grave that stunned me. Between the First and last name was a pentagram. I bent down and wiped it to make sure it was what I thougt. The various sections inside were full of symbols and I was truly stunned. Here a man even in death proclaimed allegiance to a destroyer. Amazing.

I visted about 5 local church yards on a gorgeous afternoon, at let the beauty of the day inspire me.
at the beginning I feelt a little uneasy, but I sat down and enjoyed the weather, and let inspiration hit me....

brought along a friend for my trip. It was a Local cemetary that I thought would make a good shooting ground for my nightshots. I usually go alone, but the hairs on my neck does wind up standing up after a while so I tried not to go alone this time. I went at about 10pm and did not return home untill 12am. I liked a few shots, but only one photo stood out and that is the one i went with. It was'nt what I wanted but oh well...creepy shots are hard to create.

I tried on friday night going at night I was nervous just going there. I exited the vehicle with my camera after spoting what I thought I liked for the challenge. I took 2 steps away from my car and just stopped looked around started re-thinking. I took a deep breath and said you can do this and started moving forward again.

I got to the set of grave stones I looked down and all I could think was there are dead people under that and next thing you know my mind had gone bezerk telling me crazy thoughts and so I turned around ran to the car got and took deep breaths and I was like screw this challenge this just aint for me.

Well saturday I thought ok I'll go with my girlfriend and during daylight. I got there before we even entered the parking lot I said nope lets get out of here I wont be doing this challenge.

I have never been to a funeral, I've never had anyone close to me pass away. I've only seen a dead person once and that was at work and as the owner/manager I had to take action on it.

Funny how when your fear has to do with financial situations nothing gets in the way. I guess its something to do with the hard work and effort you put into something you dont want it to go to waste.

the pentagram is actually a symbol of protection against evil.
here's some text on it.

Yes it is. I saw something on the history channel about details of the pentagram. Its to keep evil out. I dont think satan worshippers intend to become posessed by the devil. Some people worship him so they won;t be tempted by the power of the devil throught the course of their life.

In Queens New York there is this very lush Mob/Mafia cemetery that I would have liked to shoot but didn't get the chance to get there.

From what I understand, Mob figures weren't allowed into certain cemeteries but this one accepted them and wow did these guys try to out do each other or what? Not mob/tacky but elaborate. Nice Ansel Adams, Mount Rushmore like scenery only on a smaller scale.

My entry is good but I'm afriad it's also going to be dreadfully average. I still have a few hours to learn some proper PS dodge and burn or reshoot tonight when it's dark.

I just hope whatever shakes, for everyone involved, that the entires are going to be more interesting than Bored.

QUEENS, NY I do know for a fact that your borough has the biggest cemeteries in the city. You really have the oppertunity to create an immense landscape type cemetary with a spooky sky behind it. Looking forward to your submission Pawdrix.

I think I saw this same symbol several times, with the smaller symbols in the five points. I assumed it had to do with one of those fraternity organizations -- freemasons or whatnot.

OMG!!!!!!!!

Many of you DPCers went out and ACTUALLY desecrated the sacred ground of REAL cemetaries? And some of you even used tripods?

Surely you must have known that this is a metaphorical challenge. It was never expected that DPCers would risk eternal damnation for a tiny electronic ribbon.

Now you are all gonna die horrible deaths and suffer great pain and agony for all time.

Goodbye. Been nice knowing you...

Huh?

I hope that was a joke. Otherwise.........speechless.

RulerZigzag-I live in Manhattan and it was only a fleeting thought to go out to Queens(where I did grow up)and shoot. So I'm sad to say that my entry won't have all that sweeping drama and now that you mention such and interesting idea that I've missed, I'm tempted to pull my entry as it stands. Oh well, maybe no ribbon on this one but I can always look forward to my horrible death.

It is not the horrible death part that is so bad... it is the pain and suffering for all time that gets to be a drag after a while.

I was actually quite surprised when I went to the local cemetery (I had hoped to use a much smaller one elsewhere). Beyond the roadside normal part there was a lush area nestled high on the cliffs overlooking a large river.

The hugest tree I eva did see was nearby, and a beautifully landscaped outdoor crematorium (plaques set in the concrete verge of a winding garden).

Tucked into one bushy corner was one of the original gravesites, over 100 years old with the stereotypical wrought iron surround - very movie-esque.

Unfortunately I only visited at dusk/night, and most of what I just described probably wouldn't be represented well on camera. I appreciated this challenge more for making me go to a place I normally wouldn't.

Please note that the images shown in this post are not indicative of my entry for this challenge.

Yes it is. I saw something on the history channel about details of the pentagram. Its to keep evil out. I dont think satan worshippers intend to become posessed by the devil. Some people worship him so they won;t be tempted by the power of the devil throught the course of their life.

it has nothing to do with the devil really. it was a pagan thing.

Well, I must say, I was TERRIFIED. I asked some people if they thought it was disprectful and everyone said no. So I gathered a LOT of courage and my husband and decided to go yesterday. Of course the day I decide to go the weather is crappy, grey and overcast...sheesh just what I need!! I did not walk over grave sites, I just put my tripod on the street and tried to do the best I could.

I think my pic is going to be pretty typical, but I'm proud simply because
I attempted something that was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY out of my comfort zone.

It was the upside down flavor, quick look around shows those adopted by wiccan or satanic groups in modern times. Farther back many pentagrams were used for various groups & meanings. Pentacle down is what caught my eye. The fad vs. the final commitment, though if ever I go back I will catch a pic of it to research the symbol.

Personally I have not really been to a cemetery in over 22 years (since I was a young boy and my grandfather died), I mean besides seeing one while walking and/or looking from the sidewalk. Anyways, I'm actually pleased because of this challenge I was able to go to what seems like the biggest cemetary I've every heard of, it was miles big. It was very early in the morning and I just drove around the little paths and look around didn't really get out but just drove and read. It was quite interesting and eye opening, some were over 100 years old and some were new but all very touching expecially when you see the husband/wife ones and the inscriptions.

I hope not to visit anything soon again but now thinking about the whole ... these funerals and stuff is not cheap and to you buy your spot??? Anyway, I think I will just not worry about it for another 20 years ;-)

My shot is a different perspective, I picked something that appeals to my taste in regards to this challenge that was not as intrusive.

Good Luck all...
