I know this is a silly question but I am sincere. I’m wondering what the general “good taste” rule would be about using a tripod in a cemetery. I am going to be a first time visitor to one of the oldest cemeteries in Toronto this weekend and I am trying to decide whether a tripod would be appropriate. I’ve been total that this is a very active green space, with families even picnicking there. Certain sections are labeled as historic with several famous people being laid to rest there, so it’s definitely a well-visited space. As my rather non-religious family has a tradition of cremation, I don’t really have any idea what the ground rules are? (ha ha sorry couldn't resist)

Sometimes, you'll find people sobbing in front of gravestones. Just politely ask them to shuffle over a bit and keep it down so you can concentrate, and they'll usually oblige.

People have picnics there and you want to know if it is polite to use a tripod.

i don't think it would be in poor taste at all. Parts sound pretty tourist-y after all. I took a video camera to pere lachaise in paris and was probably the least obnoxious person there. No one seemed to mind.

A monopod might be less obtrusive. Just don't let it dig too deeply into the ground. Some of these graves (esp. old ones) are quite shallow...

Actually good suggestion. My tripod has dual function as a monopod so maybe I'll just use it as such, in a low key fashion.

I took a tripod into some of the old cemeteries in New Orleans and no one minded at all. I've taken shots in other cemeteries and always just keep a respectful distance from any mourners.

I wouldn't worry too much about the tripod. Genealogical society members sometimes use them during their work. I think as long as you respect the site, it shouldn't be an issue. I always go talk to the grounds keepers if I can find them. That usually helps too.

I can't imagine the use of a tripod in ANY cemetery being considered unacceptable by anyone, though i suppose it has happened. I've photographed a lot of them, and nobody's ever given me any grief. And this was with a VIEW cameras; camera box 2 feet x 3 feet, film case the size of a small cooler, tripod weighed 18 lbs, etc etc.

Then again, maybe that's why? It all looked so serious people assumed an "official" reason for the work?

Laughed? An understatement. I'm here at work, and all around me came to see what's going on!

Yeah, don't forget "surrealism" too... LOL

Maybe Drew and Langdon are feeling the effects of a long winter?

As long as you don't visit one of the cemeteries on the island of Sao Jorge in the Azores. One of the graves was a bit loose (the cement top had cracked) and you could see a skull lying below grinning. It was spooky. (It didn't help that we were looking there at sunset for a relatives grave with a flashlight)

Yeah, since I have been on this "taking pictures of Philly" kick, perhaps I'll bury someone in front of city hall and take a picture.

Better yet, I'll dig up Betsy Ross, and shoot a photo of her in front of her old house.

Sorry folks, I'm in a weird mood today.

Typically I just dance and piss on the graves of my enemies and nobody bothers me so I think you should be fine using a tripod.

This is where I would like to take a photo for this challenge. I'll give a 10 to anyone with this cemetery:

Giza

I think that it depends on the cemetery. If you go to a fairly new cemetery someone might have a problem with you photographing their dead aunt. I'd suggest an older cemetery that no relative would likely be visiting. Other than that it should be cool. My photo class and I went to Mt. Hope Cemetery and we used huge tripods with 4x5 veiw cameras. I can't think of anything that could be more intrusive than that... photography wise.

Why would you need one? You can run faster without it.

I got chased out of a cemetery today. Attendants said it was a private cemetary (although there were no signs or anything to indicate) and they didn't want pictures ending up on the internet.

Just me and my camera. No tripod. No services at the time. No visitors at the time, only residents and a pleasant but firm attendant with clear directions for me to leave.

Hope you all have better luck. Hope I have beter luck later inthe week.
