We have all been there. Go for broke as you have nothing to lose by point & shoot out the side window, as I did here:

(thumbnail is deceiving)
Taken while a light rain was falling and at 60 MPH, 200' up over the San Diego Bay. This was one of those moments I wished my car would have broken down right there, but there is absolutely no stopping on the bridge.
Wasn't a total loss. Manual focus set to infinity (so it wouldn't focus on the window) and program (P&S) mode in a 3 bracket series.

Cool shot!!

Good thing you don't live in Virginia, we don't have ANYWHERE to pull over to take shots. The majority of the state doesn't even know what road shoulders are. We often just stop in the middle of the road, and yes, we do what you did, though never with such spectacular results!

Brad, what did you do, sell your soul to the devil so that every time the shutter goes click, you get a magically wonderful image? If so, I could use your contact to the underworld as I'd sacrifice eternal damnation for shots like that. Damn.

nice job.

I am going to be doing a lot more through-the-windshield shooting myself; I have gotten a few gems that way I never would have and people here have posted some amazing ones. If I think of the 100 shots I wish I could have had in the last year, they are all those ones that I couldn't pull over for. Congrats that you got this one!!!! It is pure magic, Brad!

Great shot through a car window!

I had one of those moments a few weeks ago - there was an amazing sunset behind a silhouette of two boys and a bicycle. It was a no stopping road and my camera batteries were wasted!

Great capture Brad.

My Ansel Adams entry was shot that way, going 65mph:

70mph but to be fair I was the passenger not the driver :P

For crying out loud, Brad, are you capable of taking a bad photo??

Very nice.

New Jersey is the same way. And it doesn't help that we're the most densely populated state in the country, so there is ALWAYS someone right on your tail even though you're already doing 10 over the limit.

I went for a drive in the "country" this past weekend, saw about 10 things I wanted to shoot and couldn't find one place to put the car that didn't put me or the car in danger.

I wish I could fly. BTW, nice photo Brad

BradP what a gift you have.. it's good to see that you found that gift sometimes people have them but never find them and you seem to know perfectly what you are doing... congrats for that...
Wonderful picture... i wonder if you ever take a bad photo as someone mention on the thread...

Thanks all for the comments!

Sell my soul to the devil? LOL - I tried - he laughed and sent me back here to an eternal damnation called an update button!

Oh the humanity!

I hear that. I'm afraid to look at my browser history, which undoubtedly contains about 5 pages of links that represent that I have done virtually nothing at work today except for clicking on that update button.

Thanks!

Wonder no more: I get lucky once in a while, and sure have many gigs of garbage just like anyone else. LOL

This thread makes me feel soooo much better. My family think I'm mad for doing this, but sometimes it is the only way.

This challenge entry was also taken while I was driving:

And this was created from a photo taken through the windshield, though I was stopped at a red light at the time:

Thanks. I really would have liked to be able to do something like that for the surreal challenge, but of course it uses illegal editing. In the end I didn't enter.

May I ask what you did in the editing? I am constantly trying to figure out what and how much editing has been done so I can have a realistic idea of what to expect or try for out of the camera.

It was pretty easy once I went and downloaded the flood filter at //www.flamingpear.com/flood.html. If you search the forum threads you'll find out more about it.

Then it's you I have to thank for the existence of that image. It looked quite ordinary without the filter - far too much black in the foreground.

While stopped for a train to pass. The week BEFORE the AA challenge.

I can hardly take credit - I first discovered it through DPC, too!! It is a gret, fun filter!! But what you did with it is what is so special.
