Who is from NY? What part? NYC or upstate?

It's allllllllmost spring, despite the snow. We should start planning a late April meetup. I was thinking April 23rd - but are any SP's open at that time? Once summer hits, it's too hard for some of us to make gtg's, so April ...

Anyone?

Might be good to start a fresh thread.

I'm game. Given the last three replies, if we triangulate, we'd end up in Ithaca--a mighty fine town with natural attractions and a zillion places to eat.

Other suggestions for places? And when?

Ithaca would work great for me. There are several waterfalls in the area, then there's college town, The Commons, and all that too.

I think April would work for me.

Ithaca would be a great place to start. We could do Taughanock Falls or Buttermilk or something - Buttermilk is more of a hike, but Taughanock takes longer to walk to. Lots of nature along the way. Not sure if either are open yet, would have to call.

Also the lake in Skaneateles and that area - I don't know much around there, but it's beautiful.

I'm pretty sure they are not open yet. The Watkins Glen gorge is still closed. My friend works at the main off in Taughannock. I will email her and ask her when they all open.

Not sure I've been to Skaneateles so I don't know what is there either.

I love Ithaca!

Just some ideas:

Taughannock is a rather flat hike--accessible most of the year, I think. One can also drive to the overlook and then to a park above the falls.

Buttermilk is a good vertical hike. But you can hike up through the woods and down the falls trail on the way back. There's parking both top and bottom at Buttermilk--we might be able to work something out with leaving a car at the bottom and driving to the top for a start. (I have a minivan.)

On Cornell campus there's a nice hike around Bebee Lake. And the Plantation gardens offer good opportunities for close-ups. Don't know that much will be in bloom in April, though. There are also wooded trails that start at the Plantations.

I could do late April--the 24th. Have to check my calendar for other dates, but I know I can't do anything between April 13 and 22.

Hello, I'm from Elmira, not too far from ButterflySis. I, however will be in Virginia, or actually on my way back from Virginia on the 23rd. Sounds like a great idea though. There are a lot of great places in and around the Ithaca, Watkins, Elmira, Corning area. There are a lot of wineries around the Watkins area, which could make the trip for many even more enjoyable. The old buildings, Seneca Lake, and the park offer many great opportunities for photographs as well. Beebe Lake however is much better toured in the summer, than the Spring, if you know what I mean . Anyway, even if not in the fingrelakes area, it would be nice to meet up with other NY photographers, someplace.

Sounds great, KaDi. I haven't hiked either of those yet, and they are on my to-do list for this year. Casdilla Gorge (in downtown Ithaca) is very nice and leads to College Town.

Here's the Plantations bloom info.

Here are pictures of some of the waterfalls:

Taughannock
Fall Creek
Cascadilla Gorge

I have a few from Buttermilk and Treman but they aren't that great. I'll see what I can do.

I'm in Westchester, so anywhere in the tri-state area works for me, or within the 5 boroughs. :)

Didn't realize you were so close, Stephanie. We'll have to GTG when this endless winter is over.

I'm in the Albany/Schenectady/Troy region. Ithaca sounds nice, but it's a pretty long drive from here and I probably wouldn't be able to go until late spring or summer. I'm sure my whole family would plan to go for the weekend and maybe excuse me for the GTG part--my wife went to Cornell, and my daughter is looking at various colleges now.

Those times would work for me as well. The only plans I have as of now is a trip to NC the beginning of June.

You're family could join us, ya know. :-) The gorge walks are very nice.

I received a reply from my friend who works for the parks. She said,

"Depends on when the ice thaws and they get done scaling. Usually beginning to middle of May."

So...it looks like there is not set date that they open.

I'm only about an hour from Ithaca, and I'd love to meet some of my fellow DPCers in the flesh! It'd be wonderful too to visit some of the sites I've not gotten to yet in the Ithaca area. My schedule is flexible, so whatever is good for everyone else is good for me. Please keep me posted!

Yup - where abouts are you in Connecticut? I'm willing to do a CT G2G...I was just in an annual exhibition in New Canaan at the Carriage Barn.

So yeah, I'm up to getting together, even apart from a group. Sounds like fun. :)
