OK, I think I've picked up some good tips for portrait photography from you great folks. I've offered to take some pictures of my friend, her husband and their 6 y.o. daughter.

I will probably take them to a park or the beach and try for some casual shots. I need to overcome the 6 y.o.'s habit of "hamming it up" for the camera. So I don't want it to be too staged - somehow get some shots with the three of them interacting with each other.

What about when you are shooting more than one person? Where should the focus be?

What other general tips do you have? Like poses, etc?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks! Those are great kid shots!! I'll definitely get some tips from there.

What about shots with all 3 together? where should the focus be? I was visioning something with them looking at each other, creatively. But if I get a good pose of all 3 looking at the camera, where should the focus point be?

I like to let them sit and pose how they are comfortable and how they want to. I figure they are their pictures, not mine. I may guide them, but I like to give them free range.

When I am photographing one person, I focus on the eyes.

And when I have a child who likes to be funny, I just focus on them and let them make silly faces, but I keep the camera at my eye.... that way as soon as they relax their face, I can shoot. The parents usually stay in one place. You may want to explain that is how you do it so they know.

Here are a few that I did.... you can also check out all of them in my people folder. :)

Hope that helps! Good Luck!
