My daughter, age 11, is keen on photography and would like to join DPC. Is there a way for kids to join? Or does one have to be 13?

Send me an email and I'll send you the text of the waiver you need to send them. There are several "younger" members participating already, including my son Isaac, so help her jump right in, and welcome!

Thanks! I like your son's work, by the way. He has a good eye for many aspects of photography. I can tell that you let him do his own thing, which I heartily applaud. How does he take criticism and his low scores?

Thanks...he doesn't quite read yet, and really pays no attention to the scores unless I tell him he got a real good one. He likes to take pictures, but really has the normal attention span of a six year-old (38 nanoseconds), so he's really a bit of a site dilletante right now...but I'm still happy to get unbiased evaluations of his work, and I try to pass those along to him.

Lately he is deciding on the cropping, and I help with the titling (sometimes) and get the file saved and uploaded, but I'm trying to stay out of it as much as I can otherwise.

He does have a pretty good eye though -- he took a photo today where the curb was noticably slanted. I was asking about why he took it that way when I noticed that the corner of the building in the far background was exactly vertical, and that the street really did slant downhill that much! You can check out some non-DPC photos at his pBase galleries. Those were all shot with my Olympus -- he's only has the Fuji for a month...

Paul, I think what you're doing with Isaac is awesome. You sound like a great dad. I hope to do such great things with my kids (if and when I have any).

Hey, do you teach at Berkeley? If so, what? I ask because I may be moving out there next year if my girlfriend decides to go there for grad school. It's going to be there, UCSB, MIT, or Northwestern -- I hoping for there or UCSB; California's the best!

Actually, my daughters Jeni (11) and Lauren (9) are both good photographers. I'd like to encourage it. Lottie's 5 and not too interested in anything that's not pretty and pink.

And Isaac, I love the photo of the orange fungus! I think that photography is all about finding cool light as it reflects off of different things, and this fungus has that light! Interesting shapes and lines, too. I hope to see your work continue.
