This is also my best entry so far, was at 6.7 earlier, but down to 6 now... booouu ;)

I'm pleased with the comments so far, but i'd wish for a lot more. There's been one that was very constructive about my 'last minute lighting'. Thanks!

Here's where I'm at. I started with a 5.8 but dropped. I agree with some of you guys earlier--a lot of the entries don't really meet the challenge.

Yeah, i think there are some who don't understand the concept of 'surrealism'. Lots of the material submitted is just normal. I didn't start voting yet, but i plan on being rather hard on that since i went to so much lenght to shoot something out of the ordinary...

I suppose it is to be expected, but it's simply extraordinary how many of these entries show NO comprehension of what "surrealism" is, at least in the artistic sense. "Sur" as a prefix = "more than" or "over". "Surrealism" = "more than real". Abstraction is NOT surrealism, in and of itself. Surrealism, properly applied as a descriptive to art, which photographs are a category of, refers to a sort of a dream state, to the juxtaposition of incongruous objects/images, to the conjuring of an alternate reality from the well of the unconscious.

On the plus side, there are a good number of excellent, truly surreal entries in this competition. But I'm taking a hard line on this, and this will certainly be the lowest average vote I've given out, by far. IMO a SIGNIFICANT number of these images utterly miss the point.

But then, I'm just one man, and one vote.

Robt.

I read with your comments with avid interest and could not agree more that a significant number of submissions have nothing to do with surrealism. While several of the submissions would fall into that realm, that we in the 70's called "Unreal", they are not by any stretch of the imagination "Surreal"

Having reviewed each of these submissions, I am of the opinion that we are now 2 men with 2 votes, because as you fittingly noted, and with such aplomb: "IMO a SIGNIFICANT number of these images utterly miss the point.

Another man's point of view.

I think the judgement is rather harsh. Like any other medium, each genre has many different schools. Consider a 15th century painter Bosch.

Every time we judge we judge with a perception based mostly on what we like. This happens with music and all the arts. Some favor Bach and hate Wagner. Some find Dali too clean and crisp in rendition.

Then you must be able to sort the style. For example there is classic surrealism. Here you find the surreal images blended with the real. One school uses checkered floors, pillars, windows and distorted images. However, when it comes to photography it must adapt its own look and trust me, it is different from the painted efforts.

So yes, many members did miss the point but not all. The moment an image challenges your regular perception of what should be it is surrealism. You can argue the degree, but that is excatly what surrealism is. It is something that in its way fascinates the mind because it has to make an immediate adjustment to accept the unreal. Everything can not be judged in its classical sense otherwise there is no progress. Look at the arts. One school begets the other. Some survive and some just die and then we are left with a few and only the classic retains the purity but do not make the mistake of judging all from the classical point. Bach's music is superior in counter point and form but Jazz, popular music and even Rock and Roll bear enough virtue to compete for our aesthetic appeal. And yes, progression leads to deteriation at one point. Everything blows up at the end and loses its contact with its basic roots. You find this in modern music and progressive Jazz. Who listens to these forms? Just be aware that a new school is being born everyday.

Whilst voting I did feel that many photos were more abstract than sureal... but are they really one & the same? Ah well, if i like its scores well regardless!

NOT because Im an a*hole but on the assumption others may feel the same way and out of a desire to see them validated ASAP so they may be judged fairly. On my own part, I judge 'em as if they're "legal" just as the rules say I should.

Hope yours was one of them :-)

so u were the 1, lol as soon as i got done reading this post alittle while ago i got a validation request.....lol
not saying it was u but it may help my voters when it says valid there they won't just say "faked, 1" and move on.

I've decided not to vote as it will only drag down my avg vote cast and demeanor.

I think I went through 9 or 10 entries IN A ROW that weren't even in the ballpark of having surrealistic subject matter.

What planet am I on?
Please advise...

Steve, you are right. However, there is quite a collection if you proceed. You can fill the 20 percent without damaging your average vote cast.

yes a lot of people missed the BASIC EDITING issue here and have all kinds of effects obviously made in PS, but I bet you they will get a bigger score coz people don't pay attention to that.

Rules is rules. And plus if I used PS like that other than levels I could have made freakish looking reflections and crap like that.

Maybe you're right. I know I'm new here and I might be overeacting but I'm like Clint Eastwood/Old West, when it comes to these things.

Think how wide open surrealism is. It was so beautiful. How could you miss?

I have a major flu going on and the entries actually started pissing me off, so I elected to avoid the stress and annoyance of sifting. I even thought of pulling my own entry. BTW is that possible?

Hopefully I'll feel better tomorrow and see things in a different light.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It is not easy to filch PS effects in Basic editing. This site is popular in maintaining integrity along with the voters. Of course, not everything you see is beyond basic editing.

i was hoping that i wasn't alone. i did not submit a photo to this challenge this time because every idea i had involved some photoshop work that was outside of the basic editing rules.

but after looking at the submissions, i noticed that quite a few seemed to disregard that and go nuts. i tried to give some people the benefit of the doubt, but after using photoshop for many years, i couldn't believe that some were legit.

so after never requesting disqualifications before, i think i submitted at least 4. sorry guys but the rules are there for a reason. i truely hope that you can all prove me wrong, but i couldn't let them slide.

yea and some that were validated is obvious that have been messed with beyond basic edit... Coz in basic rules it says u can mess with it as long as it is the whole image not partial parts.Like for filters and so...I know in few that have been validated are major cut and paste, merge and so....

If that were true, then they wouldn't have been validated. An image that has been validated has been compared to the original and thoroughly checked for compliance with the rules.

Nice not to be in the 4's..but it's early days yet...I did a few searches for surrealism before entering. I founfd lots with rather strange compostions, which I would class as surrealism...But one site had black and white pictures of old castles and stones with really cloudy dark skys..it through me a bit. But even if this is a type of surrealism, it still doesn't look like some normal shots in the challenge.

In a way I agree with you.
I don't think I have ever given as many 3's and 4's as I have in this challenge.
But I have also givven A LOT of 8's and 9's and 10's!!
The thing here is, that there are very few mid range photos. They are either very good or very bad, IMO.
So the average vote remains the same.

This was to be my Surrealism entry. I asked a friend ...how it would do and if it fit the challenge... He said a '4' and that it needed more 'Pop'. I worked with it and got nowhere... didn't submit.
I now wonder if it would have garnered a 4 ~ and if you considered it surreal? I used basic editing adjusting the Hue, Saturation, Lighting & Contrast.
Thanks for any comments you care to make. PM me if you prefer,
any & all are appreciated...
