Alright, I know there's a ton of folks from the New York area hanging out on the site so if you'd like to share your favorite photo sites, restaurants, shows or cool little spots that only those in know know about I'd love to hear about them.

My husband and I are making a quick weekend trip there over Easter weekend and I've never been but have always wanted to go so I'm really jazzed about it. I know there's probably a ton of great photo ops and wish we'd be there longer but I'll take what I can get. We'll be staying in the Manhattan area close to Time Square. I know we're going to try to catch a show (wanted to see Spamalot but looks like it's sold out) and do some site seeing but no real schedule. So let me know what's great about your city that I've just gotta see!! :-)

Thanks a lot!!

Well...where do we start?

If you like Jazz (Contemporary/Funky/Bluesy/Jazz)you'll find the real deal at The 55 Bar(@ 55 Christopher in the Village). This is where the pro's hang out and hear their friends AND sit-in all the time. Norah Jones slums it there as well as Steely Dan alumnus and so on. It's cheap too, don't get ripped off by the famous clubs where you get treated like tourists/cattle. Cutting edge all the way.

Good restaurants are easy to find but I'd recommend The Blue Ribbon in Soho or The Blue Ribbon Bakery in the West Village.

MOMA(The Museum of Modern Art) is my favorite but SOHO galleries rock and again you'll find the most cutting edge stuff around....and that's free.

Don't miss Central Park.

All for now....

Jen,

My wife and I are planning a trip in May. We haven't booked a hotel yet. Did you get a good deal somewhere?

My route for all visiting friends who are here for one day is to walkwalkwalk:

Start in Central Park, high 70s, The Promenade, Bethesda Fountain, etc. Walk South out of the park, down 5th Avenue, see the ritzy glitzy shops. See St Patrick's Cathedral, see Atlas at Rockefeller Center. That's in the 50s, upper 40s.

Now, you can either skip midtown or walk quickly thru it ahaha. Go down to Union Square, walk down University Place to Washington SQ Park. Wind your way through Soho and Chinatown, keep going down to City Hall and then walk over the Brooklyn Bridge into Brooklyn.

Work your way under the Brooklyn Bridge to the Fulton Ferry Landing, the neighborhood is DUMBO. That's a great park with spectacular views of Lower Manhattan. Continue to Brooklyn Heights Promenade for some more views and end with a big fat dinner on Montague Street. The Heights Cafe has excellent dessert :)

Have a blast...whatever you do!

I finally got to the 55 Bar one night and saw Sweet Georgia Brown, called the last of the Red Hot Mamas. That was one of the most memorable nights of my life!

I highly recommend it :)

Central Park, Brooklyn Promenades, Prospect Park, Brooklyn Bridge, Time Square, Empire State Building (top of the buiilding), South Street Seaport, Rockeffeller Center, Grand Army Plaza (at Prospect Park), a water taxi ride around the city is also a suggestion, the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum. NY Botanical Gardens also

Hi Larry,
Was going to make reservations this evening at the Doubletree Metropolitan on Lexington which looks to be close enough to broadway, Times Square, etc... I found a rate for $180/night, but I just read some customer reviews that didn't sound so good... Dirty, smelly, bad service, but others were raving about it so who knows. So I guess we'll just take our chances, not planning on spending alot of time hanging out in the hotel anyways. I'll let you know if the smell is completely unbearable when we get back!! :-)

Scratch that, just made reservations at the Hotel Roger Williams on Madison Ave. They have a great seasonal offer going on right now, not sure about May but check it out. It looks like a sweet hotel...
Hotel Roger Williams
Anybody have any info to share about this place?

Hope you have a great time!

Edited to add: Has anybody been to The Lower Eastside Tenement Museum? Looks pretty interesting.

Check out the Red Hook neighborehood of Brooklyn, it is right across the river.
Great restaurants, bars, coffe shops; cheap too. A lot of photographers live there due to the loft spaces and the water-front architecture.

Here are some views:

It's my favorite part of the city, of course I lived there for several years; but it is still my favorite.

The South Bronx has many rich and mostly undiscovered photo opertunities. Walk around a while and ask some of the people you meet. Show them your camera and most would probably be more then happy to pose for you.

Harlem.

In addition to the other suggestions, I'd have to say:
The Natural History Museum (82nd and Broadway?) - especially the planetarium show. Very cool.

If you want ot have your camera stolen from you, then this is a great place.

There are tons of great places to get pictures:
Empire State Building
Statue of Liberty
Times Square
South Street Seaport (USS Entrepid)
Ground Zero (There are some viewing sites in the area)
Madison Square Garden
Radio City Music Hall
FAO Schwartz
Trump Tower

Just to name a few.

Well, not planning on getting the camera stolen... :-) But since B&H is just a few blocks from the hotel, I'm pretty sure I'll be making a stop there. Maybe I can finally get that Canon 50mm lens I've been wanting but too lazy to order online. :-)
