I recently purchased a lens on e-bay for 5 bucks. It's a Hanimar 135mm 3.5 lens with an M42 lens mount. It's a little sticky (like there used to be a sticker on the barrel or something), but it seems to work great. Thought I'd share.

That looks awesome... Did you have to get a special mount or anything??

yes, it's an M42 to Canon EOS adapter. You can get them for less than $20.00

How does the combo work with the camera? Full manual? Does metering work?

manual or Av mode ... I find I'm having better luck in manual mode and watching the histogram after taking the shot. I get the correct exposure settings with 3 shots or so.

The meter will work in manual mode just fine. My eos-m42 adapter keeps the lens stopped down so i have no probs with exposure. Focusing is another ballgame though...I have a vivitar 135mm 2.8.
Here is one at 2.8

and here is a shot with an extension tube, $24 new on ebay (its a sweet potato)

I was out today (finally moderate temps!) and tried some action shots...I am spoiled with autofocus and autoexposure!
