Just a reminder to be careful about that... there are a lot of shots that might appear to be black and white as the result of editing that might be black and white anyway, with no desaturization done to the image at all. It's highly possible. Just sayin'. :o)

I'm not slamming you .. but the challenge is "Light on White".

How does a LIGHT colored object in front of (on), a WHITE background, not meet the challenge? lol.

Read the whole post please. You have taken this out of context.

This is what I said:

A picture of a person in front of a white background turned into B/W is not meeting the challenge to me. And I am not singling anybody out here.

This is very exciting. First submission. I've been reading the thread... yes, it's best not to keep looking at the scores, but I also can't help myself.

Hopefully I'll eventually get used to the voting. I've been lucky. I've only deviated .1891 SO FAR. Reading some of these posts is SCARIN' ME!!

I fear it's going to be a long week :)

You're still saying the same thing.
You can't possibly know if the background wasn't white before the shift to B&W. Also, there are other ways to white out a background (level shifting), that have nothing to do with going to B&W either. I don't see why it matters if the shot is B&W or if it's color.. White is white. The processes you take getting there, as long as they are legal to the challenge rules, shouldn't make a difference.. no matter if you put up a pure white sheet and lit it well, or if you put up a baby blue sheet and leveled it white, or greyscaled it and blew it out.

I'm guessing this forum is for those of us who are a little frustrated by the early voting. I just finished voting...oh my goodness there were so many! I think most understood the challenge and there are many very good shots. I am partial to all the egg shots since that is what I did. I thought that was the perfect answer to Light on White. I enjoyed seeing the other eggs, all different, but all had the same idea. I am a little disappointed in the voting, too, but have to be happy with my photo and my opinion of it, which is that I did a good job. Thanks for listening to my ramblings & good luck to all of you.

I have only voted on 18%. What's struck me so far is the different white tones. It sure does enforce what we already knew...about monitor calibrations.

That is a very accurate statement about some images appearing as a B/W but actually presented as a raw image without a lot of post editing. I know because my shot was done against a pure white background , white make-up and a slight increase in contrast, Because of this I feel my image is being scored low because of the belief that it is a straight B/W. Everybody I have spoken to thinks my image has strong visiual impact and follows suit to the meaning of the theme of this challenge. I spent close to 4-5hrs working with my subject material and my studio lights to get the right exposure for the diffrent tonal values my image presents. Oh well maybe next time , after all beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the only one I need to please is myself.

Nice to see I am not the only one in this boat!

I just had my first validation request!!! Cool. The funny thing is...All I can remember doing to the picture post-processing was cropping and maybe playing with the balance a litte, but I don't think I did. Truthfully I didn't pay that much attention to it as I didn't do much. Can't wait to hear back from the SC.

Why would a b/w entry not work for this challenge? That's odd. It's not "cheating". The challenge topic can be met either in colour or in b/w (IMHO, of course)

I thought it was all about experimenting and learning from these challenges. This is something I haven't tried and honestly gave it my best shot to not over expose my highlights. Which I feel I accomplished

Just for the record, here's a shot in full color right out of the camera that I did NOT enter in the "Light on White" challenge, and I'd be steamed if you scored it lower than otherwise because you thought it was B/W... C'mon, get real... How about a half dozen eggs on a white plate? Several variations of that around...

Working on my all time lowest score. The rules said "Be mindful of over-exposing your highlights" so I did.

Hmmm, let me know the exact time of that bonfire and maybe I'll put my firefighting skills to work and rescue said equipment. I think your canon may be quite a bit better than mine even with a couple of scorch marks, lol.

Over expose you mean? Hmmmmm... Look for the photo of someone over exposing their highlights. :-).

My first 3 are up right now and it is amazing how often I look. I have a 5.8, a 5.0, and a 3.1 so far. I agree with most of my comments, and I am almost embarrassed about some of the decisions I made in 2 of those shots in retrospect, but I am having fun. One of the shots I am proud of, but I wonder if I can live up to it in the future. I was sort of amazed that I took the picture. My mind is reeling trying to figure out these next two challenges. I think I have some great ideas, but in 3 pictures I have learned one thing for certain...don't be afraid to let go of an idea if it just aint workin'. Another thing I am learning...no matter how positive your attitude about shooting with substandard equipment, it still limits what you can do. I have ideas that I just can't pull off with my canon elph. Frustrating? well yes; but it doesn't make it less fun and I may have to get very creative to do some of the things I want to do.

I don't know about you, but I so can't wait to see who took what pics. It's killing me.

That should narrow it down. There are a lot of over exposed (and even more under) in this challenge. At least I know I'm in good company.
