They have, or used to have, a lot of coal. That's all I know... Hence the old saying, "Carrying coals to Newcastle" as an example of a useless task.

Robt.

Addendum:

Carry coals to Newcastle

Do or bring something superfluous or unnecessary, as in Running the sprinkler while it's raining, that's carrying coals to Newcastle. This metaphor was already well known in the mid-1500s, when Newcastle-upon-Tyne had been a major coal-mining center for 400 years. It is heard less often today but is not yet obsolete.

A Brief History

I live not far from Newcastle, about 15 miles.

Its a good place for photo's, lots of grand architecture, the river, the bridges etc.

See my portfolio for some examples. I'll get some websites and post them if you like?

Now I'm confused about which Newcastle the original poster is visiting :-)

This site is for a city in Australia. I thought they were referring to Newcastle in the UK.

Newcastle is a wonderful city. I especially love its music scene and the dance floor stompers it has produced such as 'Fog on the Tyne' by paul gascoigne and 'Lets get ready to Rumble' by Ant and Dec. Class...absolute class :)
