I had the perfect picture for this one, but ran out of time for it!
Well..... I'll be on vacation from work in 3 days, then I'll have more time to dedicate to it!

ok did i miss something? i thought we weren't allowed to have text?
02/28/2005 07:31:16 AM · #29
I also think text was not allowed.
Probablly a few DQs on the way...
But wonderful billboards there to look at!!!
Good luck to all!!

Question: A good deal of my thoughts (too many perhaps)are leaning towards, concept and execution, as are most of my comments, more than the photo at hand. Since we're not advertising experts should I let that slide even though it's a package deal???

we may not be advertising experts but we know what advertising is..if you watch TV, read, or ironically, look at billboards..you can think of a topic for an ad

Wrong challenge

I probably should have never entered a member challenge. Oh well not going for a ribbon. I just want to learn and find help from other people on how to improve. I will ask a question later because if I ask now I will give it away.

IF the text was not added digitally to the image, it should be ok.

"Take a photograph that might grace a highway billboard (those large signs you see on the side of the road). Your submission should be in landscape orientation, and should be twice as wide as it is tall to simulate a common billboard aspect ratio (recommended submission size is 640x320 pixels). Title your entry with what the billboard would be promoting."

Where does it say "text not allowed"? Yes mine has text. And yes I got a DQ request. But if I get DQ'ed it won't be because I created the text in the editting stage. So for those of you who think the only way to add text is through post processing, think again. And even though I have a sh!tty font, I'm flattered that some people think I produced it in PS. Too bad you have to kill me with low scores because you can't see farther than your first impression. But that's a risk I took by entering it with text.

"Title your entry with what the billboard would be promoting."

I interpreted this line as "text not allowed"

I haven't completely let the use of, text inclusive shots to affect my voting, in most cases.

I'm a little bummed that people think I did an edit, when my shot was, totally pure and of the actual thing. It means so much, to the whole idea and the capture as well. What can ya do???

<<< ...silent scream...>>>

I'm feeling stupid here, what's the difference between editing and post processing? And no, I'm not the one that tried to DQ you.

I think a lot of people see it that way. But also remember that as long as it's done with the camera, it's part of the photograph and therefore you are not adding text, it was there when the picture was taken. Also remember that according to the rules you should vote as if an image was valid even if you suspect it is doctored or hasn't yet been validated (loosely interpreted of course).

I still think it's funny that people don't read the challenge rules. I knew I was going to see photos of actual billboards!

They are one in the same.

Even if you were the one or one of the ones who requested a DQ, that's entirely your right as a participant; I don't have a problem with that. I do however have a problem with someone voting entries down solely because it contains text, without actually knowing if it is valid or not. Again no where in the rules does it say or even imply that text is not allowed (other than in the Advanced Rules where adding text in post processing is not legal).

edit. As one kind commenter just suggested, I should have had the image validated before voting started - I have only myself to blame for this. :) Alternatively I could have left the text out; in retrospect I think the image would have been stronger without text.

I took a break from my update button for a couple of weeks (a combination of disappointing challenge results and little time to shoot). I finally got some time and enthusiasm back this weekend and entered two challenges. Back to updating...

You should be ok as long as you did not add the text in with PS. All kind of images have text in them. As long as it is there when you take the photo. Just look at the road sign challenge. if text were not allowed almost everyone would have been DQ'ed

so no one may ever photograph anything with text in it?
sounds like some who read the rules misinterpret them...
