i think it'll be better if you FORCE people to look at a photograph for at least 1 minute before you vote. I.e. you can't cast a vote until 1 minute later.... but then, that'll take a lot of time and less people would vote. Either way, I am not surprised.

What upset me is not why people rated my photo down because of its dark subjects, its these other photos that are simply OBJECTS that get voted high (duckies, etc.) I like #1-3 because they convey feelings, but some of the top 10s do not and they still get voted higher.

[i]Sanandan's photo "fear of the Supernatural" was one of my favourites for the "Childhood" challenge, but it ranked 158th! This happens to a lot of photos, but in this case it has really, really annoyed me. It was rated down because the voters didn't understand it, and didn't try to. I don't quite understand it myself, but I know enough about Hindu culture to at least have recognised it as a statue of a girl sitting on Ganesha's knee. Why can't people be open-minded to other people's cultures, give them the benefit of the doubt, and even be PLEASED to see something from a foreign person's childhood and learn from it rather than mark it down because it's not familiar to them?

Sanandan, if you could explain a bit about your photo here, I'd be very happy to find out more about it!

There you go! Some of the DPC voters are just rude. Below 5 is a bad score no matter how you cut it and there are a lot of -5 votes handed out here. The judges should have to explain low ball scores before casting them.

rdesai - that's cool, I'm not saying that it should have won or anything. I can understand if people have GOOD reasons for voting something low, but I really don't think most of those 1-3 votes had any good reason behind them other than not believing that it met the challenge.

Let's compare it to, say, Gone Fishing. I gave that a 9. It's another good photo of a statue of a child, but in a different context, and it scored almost a whole point (and 50 places) higher. I think almost that whole difference in scores comes down to the lack of recognition/understanding that people felt towards Sanandan's photo. I know WHY it's like this here, but it's annoying.

As a trained vocalist I'll show up in any kind of bar you choose and sing my heart out. Odds are they'll like it. But in DPC the low ball scorers are an insult to even a country & western fan........

lisa, here is my thing. i actually thought i recognised ganesha in this particular photo---but the more i looked, the more i couldn't relate. out of my two minors in college, one was classical literature--because i liked it!! point being--i am open to oddities in any set of languages or beliefs---but not this picture. i would love to hear more about this photo because i didn't get it either! and strangely, i consider myself to be a little bit of an *in-touch-weirdo* when it comes to anything "supernatural". so, yes I got the hindu reference, but even as i stared at the pic---could not figure out the point. maybe i dont share the fear? ok. what if it had been a picture of...edited... oooph, sorry. i will/would continue this in private, but not here!

Pictures of the Christ will get you more greif than pictures of Saten devouring the world.Fears of childhood are the least of our worries! We live in a world where Shiva reigns and Vishnu is ranked 3.5 at best in DPC.Follow a path to the esoteric and leave this out lander crap behind........

Hmmm... I did understand the photo. I think fear of supernatural is something that touches you as a child. Even many adult people are afraid to come to a hell or something in their afterlife. As far as I know india has lots of different religions and subtypes of these religions. Many of them comprise lots of gods and goddesses for seemingly every aspect of life.

But I also could relate because of my own experience: When I was a child my grandma told me one day that on May 30th the world ends and everything will be over. It was the 29th of May and you can imagine that I somehow freaked out ;-) She was amused by my reaction and questions ("Really?", "Why?", "All people will die?") but I was even more upset when I saw how cool she was about it ("Well... someday everything has to come to an end"). I was very angry but much more relieved when she finally told me it was a joke.

But I also think the photo is techically good. It has a good composition (can't see any distratcing), good lighting (look how the shadows give the statue depth) and good focus. I also gave points for creativity because it was very unique. I especially liked how primary subject is just a small part of the whole thing and the sculpture seems to sit on the lap/knee of a much bigger sculpture (probably buddha). I don't know if it was done intentionally but to me it looks like a child sits on the lap of his mother/father. IMHO a nice detail and it fits to the challenge.
Overall my score was 9.

Just my humble opinion...

David,
I just don't get you! LOL. Sometimes, I agree absolutely with what you have to say; sometimes you strike me as a big crab. And sometimes you just come out of left field. Well, you make me laugh at least.

This is totally dependent on my medication.

FYI, your photo was a 6 to me. It's one I didn't comment on. It struck me as generally average, but with strong colors, so +1.

I'm sorry Dawn. I was speaking of the Candid entry which is curently at 40/3.8/0 . I know the Childhood sucked in comparison to the others. You were kind to give it a 6. Thanks! Come back next week and report please.

Oh, I misunderstood then. So, I'll be happy to give my thoughts if I don't comment on your photo during the week. I haven't voted/commented on any yet. Promised myself I wouldn't be glued to the computer for Labor Day.

Anyway, I mostly just wrote back because you oddly intrigue me.

Dawn
