I am delighted to report that my new Nikon D2x camera has finally been delivered to me. After four different promised delivery dates, my new toy is now ready for fun.

It appears to be much better compared to the Nikon D1x cameras that I traded in for it. My first impressions are as follows:

* It exhibits much more realistic colourimetry,
* Skin tones are far superior,
* The auto-focus is now blazingly faster,
* The resolution is much higher - a remarkable 12.4 Megapixels,
* The largest files sizes are unfortunately bigger too - about 26 MB with the dual save mode which records both Raw and JPEG simultaneously,
* A vast improvement is expected in battery life. This will be welcomed over the D1x, which was challenging in this area,
* The feel and form are as comfortable as the D1x and the Nikon F5 or F100,
* The functionality is better, for example the image delete is more logical and easier / quicker to use,
* The new auto-focus is highly dynamic with tracking zones that are a big improvement over the D1x,
* I have not yet used the iTTL features, but I do look forward to this enhancement,

All in all, I am pleased with this new camera. I have the new IEEE 802.11g wireless system on back order and look forward to playing with an un-tethered camera for studio work or even remote work to an ad-hoc laptop. I also purchased two 2GB CF cards to accommodate the larger file sizes and these new Extreme III cards significantly faster (about 20 Mbps) which benefits the larger file sizes and the workflow process.

A new Nikkor Micro 105mm f2.8D was also added to my inventory, so this is the only lens that I have mounted on the body so far. I look forward to a clear evening to hook up the Nikkor 1,000mm f11.0 catadioptric lens with the x2 adaptor and shoot the moon again. In the new "crop" mode (x2), I should be able to achieve a 4,000 mm focal length or x80 magnification at over 6 megapixels. I am interested to see if my moon shot is improved over earlier efforts. Here is a sample from the D1x configuration at x60 times. Once I capture a new shot with the D2x I will post both side by side for comparison.

Congrats on the new camera! That seems to be a great piece of equipment from what I have read and heard - good luck with it. Very interested to see the mon comparison shots once you get it. Also would like to hear how that wireless system performs.

I will share opinions on the wireless once I receive it and give it a try.

Congrats on the D2X. I've been considering getting a D1X body since the prices are starting to come down. Not sure if I want to do that or just keep saving for the D2X. I want something a bit faster than the D70 for action sports.

The D2x is very fast. It is noticeably faster than the D1x which was very good as well. I had it (D2x) set for rapid fire and it took six images before I could lift my finger off the trigger. You will need large capacity CF cards for this baby.

Congrats... I envy you... I think I'll stick to my lowly E-1 for a while... :)

If anyone is interested...
A review done by a photographer.
The samples look like they beat the 1Ds Mark II in image quality.
Looks to be a very nice camera.

Thanks Jacques, I paid for the D2x in September 2004 and just received in on March 25, 2005. So, for a mad impulse buyer like me it has been five and half months of hell waiting for it. As we discussed before, they changed the promised delivery date four times. I continued to question the validity of my decision over the waiting time. But, now that it is here, I know that I was wise to trade-in the D1Xs for it.

Jacques, you should see the high resolution output! It is stunning.

I also purchased the 105mm f2.8D micro lens, so watch out for a new challenger on the next macro event. I am not a bug person like you, but with the tonal quality of this new camera, I can envision an interesting macro of a butterfly. All I need now is summer.

By the way, I also purchased the Canon i9900 printer. I am told that this is a good printer? I hope to set it up and get it running today as we are all snowed in here in Toronto.

Later, once the snowplows clear the roads and the walkways, I will take the dogs for a walk in the snow and see if I can capture anything interesting with the D2x. I will then give the printer a try.

I have needed a mental health day since I sold my company in January, so it looks like today is the day.
