I have a strange problem that i can't seem to diagnose - My camera is not recognized on my computer anymore, when i connect the usb and turn the camera on. I hear one of those sounds that usually plays when new hardware is connected - but it is a different sound - it almost sounds like "duh duh duh" in quick succession - so the computer knows the camera is there but at the same time it doesn't recognize it and i can't download images - I have reinstalled all of the software, including the drivers, and i get the same problem. Any idea what is happening?

I am using Windows XP

Thanks in advance

Possible USB cable from camera to computer problem. If not that you can get a card reader if you don't want to lose you pictures and download them. This will also help in narrowing it down from cable or storage device.

I always use a card reader, much simpler.
In your case I would uninstall the camera and software then ensure it is removed completely in device manager, it should be detected then just install again.

This happens on my PC as well.
If i leave the camera conected and restart then it sees the device. This allows me to use it normally for a couple of days and then it reverts to the problem again. Don't have a solution as yet. I have tried reinstalling all drivers including USB2 drivers but can't seem to find the root of the problem. Probably something to do with microsoft. (if in doubt, blame Microsoft)
If you find a solution let us all know.
Good luck

I uninstalled SP2 and then reinstalled my camera software/drivers. I still have the exact same problem... I will switch over to a card reader if i must - but this is really bugging me - my camera worked fine and then, all of a sudden, it just stopped working.

Belive me once you have and use a card reader you'll wonder why you bothered installing he camera at all.

Plus if you have more than one camera, different makes it really simplifies things.

I have had the same problem in spades. The best solution is to forget all about the camera's software and get a card reader for $25. While I still haven't followed my own advice, I found that the freeware version of cam2pc works just fine with Windows XP. It's also my front line sorter/editor because it displays RAW files as well. Their site is:

//www.nabocorp.com/cam2pc/

I would be interested in knowing whether this approach solved your problem.

Have a look at the My Pc -> Properties -> HardWare -> Device administrator and look for any yellow exclamation sign. If there is some one, delete it with no mercy, and then let the system find new hardware (in the hardware list, right click on the pc icon at the top).

Some times the device is changed from one usb to another or it just fail to work one day, and windows mark it is "faulty" until you delete this yellow exclamation and let the device be found again.

If it doesn't help, go to the card reader, I used to have the cable around and plug there any of my two cameras, but a card reader is far more simplier and faster (USB2 always).

Before anybody should buy a card reader actually double check to make sure you dont have the Autoplay dialog box issue a common problem i troubleshoot at my job go into my computer and while your camera is on check to see if you have a removeable disk under the section Devices with removable storage if you do there isnt anything worng with your camera you jus have the autoplay issue. Heres a link to microsoft.com that fixes those problems its worth a shot Autoplay Fix Also another way to find out if you have the problem is by putting in a blank CD a autoplay dialog box should pop up as well.

i usually go into Computer Management with Admanistration Tools in the Control Panel to access the camera as it doesn't appear in My Computer unless i reboot. I just click on Disk Management, the camera is there, just right-click on the partition and select Open/Explore.. jobs a good'un.

Seeing the camera in Disk management doesnt nescesarily guarentee its going to working on your computer. In fact it might not show up in my computer but still be listed in disk managment meaning that there could be a conflict between between your camera and another device on your computer for an example if your computer has a card reader or if you havea zip drive you would need to change the cameras drive letter and paths but i ve never tried jus right clicking on it and opening it i gotta try that one.

Thanks for all the replies....

I actually did get it to work, but I don't know why it worked...

I have 2 usb ports on the front of my computer, and I had originally only tried those ones - neither worked...but I got to thinking, and remembered that there was also a usb port in back of my computer, where my scanner was plugged in. I tried it in there and it worked fine.

Does anyone know why it might work in one usb port but not another? Seems strange. It may have something to do with that yellow exclamation point thing that bitfarmer was talking about.
