I do not speak a very fluent english, so please excuse me.
Anybody know why can you receive ONES for a submission rated with an average of 6'02??
I mean, I NEVER EVER give ONES. Maybe THREES or FOURS with some very very bad shots, but NEVER ONES. Why this behaviour is so unusual?
Why couldn't we vote becoming aware with others work??

This is my first post, no crucifixion for me please :)

This WEB is the one that makes me love the net.

First off welcome to DPC, you should have a lot of fun here.

The question of why good photos will still get votes of ones is a question that gets asked a lot and there has been much discussion on it. Most of us just take it as part of life here and don’t worry about it. It is hard to know what the person who leaves a vote of 1, on a good photo, is thinking at the time since they never seem to leave comments. In the end the few 1 votes don’t effect the score much so it really does not matter, for me I just view it as a mystery and don’t worry about it.

Thank you scott. I'm new in this world of photography and I'm trying to learn day by day. I've submitted a shot for bridges and when I reached a 6'2, I felt really glad, but from 214 to 216 votes, I had 5'9 or something. You know, these ARE two ONES!! :D

Alrigth, I won't be worried about it. Thanks again.

I think there are three reasons that a 1 might be given:

1) The person thinks there is nothing good about the photo in context of the challenge. For some, that means the photo has no relevence to the challenge, or perhaps it's so dark or so small you can't see anything. For others, they just don't like the subject matter (religion, politics) so they automatically vote it a 1.

2) Sometimes, the most amazing photos get a 1...I think it would be tough to argue that at least some of the ones aren't from people who have no reason to give a 1, other than to lower the average vote because they feel threatened by such a good photo or perhaps because they have nothing better to do. Those people (mythical or not) are often referred to as 'trolls' on this website. Also, the site has protections in place so that if somebody votes almost everybody a 1 (or another strange voting pattern), their votes don't count.

3) They genuinely made a mistake. They thought '1' was best or perhaps their finger slipped.

As Scott said, don't let the ones bother you too much...they never bother me at all. I'm more worried about the 3's, 4's and 5's that indicate that my picture is probably boring or bland in that voter's opinion...

Hope this helps, and welcome to DPC!

There is a fourth reason... some people are just very harsh in their voting overall. There are members whose average vote given is below 3.5. While the voting scale goes from 1-10, the final scores almost always fall within a 2-8 range.

Hector, your average score given is only 4.1645. I would say that you are a harsh voter yourself. I think my average score given at 4.77 is low and I'm giving it much thought. We should all ask ourselves if a photo really deserves that 1, 2 or 3.

Thought mine was low at 5.9406
