This is probably more of a heads up (especially around here where date is important).

Out of the blue this morning my 20D date had reset itself (could be user inflicted) to 01-01-2000.

I am careful to check that the camera is off when changing lens and/or removing/inserting CF flash. (but have pull the CF out with it on in the past),

Not sure what could have caused it but it was weird that all my customs settings remained only the date had changed.

Good deal, It is not just me.

Yes, I had this happen once back in mid-January. Vey odd - had not happened before, has not happened since. Strange occurance though.

Andy,

That would be very unusual to happen on its own and at the same time be pretty hard to, as you say, "user inflict." If your camera is fairly new, keep an eye on it. May possibly be an internal problem and worthy of warranty attention.

Thanks for that "heads up". Hasn't happened to me yet, but it was a good reminder to check every now and then. (ugh - the NEXT thing to remember!)

BOY- YOU JUST WOULD NOT BELIEVE!!!!!!!

This has happened to me - with some dire consequences.
Watch out, especially if updating firmware.

Anyone have any further info on this? Does removing a lens cause this to happen?
02/16/2005 06:51:19 PM · #7
I have not yet had that type of problem after updating firmware or changing the lens. I will see if I can find info on other sites and pass the info over.

Me too. It's happend 3 times to me. It seems to happen when I put my battery back in after charging. Good thing I bought the extended warranty for it.

I really hope it doesn't turn into a problem. I really like this camera.

Blimey, this is more common than I thought. Thanks for this post Andy - you've stopped me from thinking I'd been forgetful or lazy, but now we've got a new problem.

Did any of you have the date go back to anything other than 01-01-2000?

Most likely, this is happening when the battery is removed.

If this is the case, check the CR2025 lithium battery in your camera. This battery is in the small round door on the bottom of the camera, next to the tripod mount. This is a backup battery designed to keep the date/time set in the camera while the main battery is out.

If your camera is losing the date/time when the main battery is removed for more than a few minutes, most likely the CR2025 is depleted. A replacement is available for less than $5 here or at most electronics stores.

Has anyone had this problem and had the date reset to anything OTHER than 01-Jan-2000?

Has anyone had this problem when the battery was NOT removed?

In my case, if the CR2025 battery was at fault I would think this problem would recur until it was replaced. But the fact that this incident only happened once, no more than a few months after the camera was purchased, and has not happened in the month since, does not point to the battery. At least not in my opinion.

It has only happened to me the one time, and unless it becomes a recurring problem I'm not all that worried about it.

In my case the battery was not removed. Took pics last night and date correct. No battery removal between. This morning: Camera off, took off my Canon 50mm and put on my Tamron 28-300mm, power on and I was at the set date screen.

ED: I stand corrected, checked back at my pictures and this happened to me last night. Date was fine when I left work...It reset between work and home or when I got home and put it on a tripod to take some shots...still no battery change...

Check the contacts of the backup battery.
Removing it, or bad contacts resets the camera.

FYI club, the CR2025 is inside the battery compartment on the 20, not on the bottom like the 10.

This problem would occur if CR2025 is getting flat. The voltage required to keep the custom settings etc will be lower than that required to keep the clock going... So the Clock resetting is a warning that your CR2025 is nearing the end, so to speak..

And as you said, they're cheap...

Edit: Ooo, forgot.. Me to, about two weeks after I got it. I checked the 2025 battery, and it was low. Got it replaed by the shop under warranty.. (who me, cheap? :-) )

Sounds like a bad batch of CR2025's must have gone out with these cameras...

Has anyone had the date reset to anything OTHER than 01-Jan-2000?

This happened to me with my 300D - once only. But it coincided with the camera locking up completly, no shutter, no auto focus etc. That was about a month ago but its been fine since.

I am speculating now that my camera took some sort of impact or shock that caused a brief loss of contact with the battery. the contact for the battery in the 20D is a light spring loaded clip that rests on the edge of the battery. If contact is lost for even a moment the date resets.

Also, I noticed that the battery is a CR2016, not a CR2025. The CR2025 is not a replacement battery is it?

My apologies... the CR2025 is used in the 10D... they must have changed the battery between the 10D and the 20D.
