I think this is going to be a really tricky challenge. You not only have to find something to fit the period, you have to find something to fit the period in the opinion of people of all ages from just about anywhere around the planet. There's a bunch of Americana stuff mentioned in this thread that just won't resonate to the rest of us. Should be a lot of fun to see what people do.

The 70's in North America were full of political outrage and chaos in general, personally I'd like to see political statements represented as opposed to straight-up peace signs. But I don't know how well this theme will translate across borders.

I'll see if I can find an old 70s car around, it's the only thing I can think of. Anybody else got any groovy ideas? |
See if you can find a Chevy van with shag carpeting on the dashboard and a waterbed in the back. If you're successful and get into the groove you won't really care if your photo takes a dive. :o)

sounds like some of these kids may have been conceived in that very vehicle lol |

Did someone say car show??????? LOL I promise I won't enter any more cars for a while!! |

What he said - I actually own a pair of flared jeans and some fairly seventies style clothes.... now if I can just grow an afro and a suitable 'stache' by next wednesday I should be able to throw on a headband, take a couple of self portraits and win this puppy in a canter :).
Any aussies or kiwis here see the 20/20 cricket match between australia and new zealand yesterday ? How good were those new zealand throwback outfits - (for those of you who didn't see it - all the new zealand players wore their 1970's beige and brown uniforms with the huge collars and all of them grew 70's style facial hair and wore headbands - it was hilarious). The funny thing was - when I turned on the game I couldn't figure out why ricky ponting was batting in a late 1970's world series match when he'd only been playing for australia for 7 or 8 years!
Sorry for the confusion north american readers - don't worry, we'll return to our usual programming shortly :P.

well at first i thought i'd never be able to submit something to fit this theme as i'm a young'un and didn't experience the 70's (although i do have curtains that look like they came straight out of a cereal packet in the 70's lol)....
I've got a pretty good idea but instead of being "outside the box" it's a bit borderline so hopefully the results wont reflect my recent submission lol.
I'm gonna love seeing some of the entries, i dare say a few will be very groovy! |

For those of you dissing the 70's, it was a great time to be a teenager.
Drugs were almost legal
The drinking age was was 18 and licenses were paper with no photo anyway, so the defacto drinking age was 16.
There was no Aids
There was no Herpes... In fact VD only meant a shot of penicillin in your butt.
Nobody had discovered that the pill had bad side effects so most HS girls were on it. And, abortion was legal, cheap and there were no protesters - in fact it was advertised on the radio.
Drunk driving was a relatively minor offense if nobody got killed.
I know that we look at some of these issues differently as adults but as for growing up, I will put the 70's up against any era. |
