sneaky, I must say this has been a great challenge so far. I voted 24 eights so far. 9 nines, and 7 tens

Just reminding voters of this.

I think your to late mines dropping like a brick well if it had started at any height anyway, but at least it's a way provoking comments got more comments than when I managed a top 15 image of course nearly all say 'where's the bridge' I didn't think I was being obscure. Still some nice comments as well and I still like the shot.

Good luck peecee

Well, I did something a bit out of the box also, but it isn't doing as well as I had hoped, although the comments are mostly positive.

My first challenge and I went with something out of the box. Started early with around 4.0, now up to around 4.4. There are some very talented photographers here. You had better bring your "A" game or you'll be left in the dust. It's only a vitual blue ribbon but the competition really brings out the best in everyone.

This is the first time I've ever entered in a challenge, so I'm pretty happy with my score! As I just signed up to this site not long ago, I think it's a pretty safe bet to say that I'm addicted! And thank you to all those who are giving comments, the constructive critism really helps.

That statement was just to trip you up. Most voters will never stand for nuance.

Hey all. I'm new around here. This is my first challenge. Hovering around 5.8, not sure if this is good or not...it seems so, but to my logic dosen't that make me land right square in the middle of average???

Oh well, I'm sure I'll cathc on eventually!

Wow! First timers with 5.8 and 5.9. Makes me feel kinda inadequate. I'd be thrilled with a 5.8. I figured as a first timer I would be OK with finishing in the top 50%. Not gonna happen with 4.4. Live and learn. Or should I say shoot and learn?

I'm new to voting here. These results all seem low. The calibre generally is quite high it looks to me. I haven't entered this challenge, but just finished voting. I gave away about 30 10s and 95 per cent of my scores were above 5. There were some utter crap shots that weren't even worthy of putting in a photoalbum as a snapshot that I coudln't believe people woudl enter. I gave away four 1s.

You may find solace in the fact that not ALL first timers are novices at photography. In addition, some of the veterans we have on this site have on occasion posted (by their standards anyway), some rather low scores.

You are perfectly right though in stating "shoot and learn", as this is a fantastic place to learn.

I am not telling you how to vote, but to me, giving a 1 is a rare thing. Since you are new I'll tell you how it goes, I've never seen anyone end up with anything over an 8 for a final score. A final score of 6 - 7 usually means a ribbon or at least top 20. Its nice to hear you gave so many 10's, but to me a 10 is abosolute perfection, something you see in a magazine (and there are a few in this challenge). Anyway, welcome aboard and keep giving us those 10's!! lol

02/17/2005 02:59:22 PM · #117
The fact that the first place rarely ends up with a score above 8, does not mean we should stop giving 9s and 10s to anything except perfection.

Not everyone is going to like the same shots, which is why 'average score' is rarely great. Of late, a number of challenges even have the blue ribbon under 7. That just says voters arent using the 1-10 scale well.

In this challenge, I wouldnt mind handing out over 30 9s and 10s. There are several calendar-worthy photographs here.

My 1-10 scale is more like 3-8. I tend to hang to the right, to the left or on 6 if I feel the shot is, at least on subject and respectably well taken.

8's are shots that blow me away but I also assume there's something around the corner that is going to be much better and deserves a 9 or 10. As there ideally will or could be something better doesn't mean there actually is. 8's are still magazine quality, in my mind.

Am I being too harsh or too much of a perfectionist? Should I rethink my voting system?

...don't wanna throw things off kilter.
And on a side note, I think this is such amazingly great fun. Thanx for the opportunity.

I usually vote similair to how Pawdrix does it. I hardly ever give a 1 or 2 unless the photo deserves it. I will vote a 6 for a photo that has an above average quality to it, whether it's composition or innovative in any way. If I see any photos that really stand out, then those usually get 7's and 8's . I save my 9's and 10's for the photos that look the best in the particular challenge. So even if a photo isnt perfect, I would give it a 10 just because there are none that can top it in the particular challenge.

181 Votes , 6.36 Avg. score. I'm happy with this, I joined in december and have submitted to 3 challenges. This will definetly increase my over all average. I think I'm going to finish in the top 10%. We will see, still a lot of voting to go. The movie challenge submission I entered was really corny. I did not expect a high score, it was just for fun. A lot of great pictures out there everybody really put their best foot(lens) forward on this one.

I saw a couple shots of great bridges, I would have preferred a nose. But I do stand back in aww of some of what is posted on here great work great site...good find for me..
