After my first few publications to the local newspaper I was talking with Setzler about police scanners and using them to get newsworthy shots... He told me that it was frowned upon and was in the same league as ambulance chasing. I havent purchased a scanner, but I would... This is a great question. I would like to hear opinions on the ethical side or legal side of this. :)

Ever watch the news from Los Angeles. Remember the news helicopters following OJ on his bizarre chase through LA while he held himself hostage? What about all the other high-speed chases on TV, that footage is not from the LAPD.

Yes, as I live in CA, and like I said in my previous post, whatever news is worth reporting is a different story. Please dont get into a what-if argument with me, I am currently attending criminal justice classes and I have to listen to it all day from classmates. I personally think that police scanners are great as you can be informed of what goes on in your city/town and at least know what has/is happening, as for waiting for a call (which there are MANY every night/day) and chasing it to take pictures is just (as the other person said) like chasing ambulances.

With all this being said those of you that have them say even for hobby and those of you that dont be aware....

Scanners that are around today can pick up local phone conversations from 9hrz or the wireless devices, child monitor...

Only because I am big on ID and credit card info being stolen and I like to leep up with staying safe... its not wise to pay a bill on one of these frequencies with your credit cards..
I started using my regular phone..

I went crazy 4 years a go and said never again will I use them baby monitors cause I kept hearing stuff.. turns out someone else had one our street...
