I took some photos over the weekend of a friends son and his friends who have a band. They wanted a photo for their press release and this is what we came up with.

Im not good at posing people, plus these guys were bickering and making fun of each other and that made it hard to get some good shots. I did some mild editing and you should be able to tell the original from the edits

The Band dudes

Honest and harsh critiques welcome ( but dont kill me) :)

I have to say that 4489 is my favorite, with 4500, 4456, 4492, and 4471 following. I like the poses overall, but I am a bit disconcerted by their eyes... none of them seem to be looking in the same direction, and when they are, it's away from the camera and that makes me wonder what they are looking at. I like the backgrounds and scenery. I think you've done a good job... I know I couldn't do nearly that well! :o)

A bit afraid of those wider aperture settings on the outdoor solo portraits, are you?

I like all the black and white ones -- seem to add a certain mood to the photos that goes good with their looks.

thanks everyone, well i forgot to check the setings after one of the guys was previewing the images and I guess he moved the dial from Av mode to full auto.

We are going to reshoot most of the images in a week or so and hopefully we will have better weather

Anyother comments?

I think that you need to find a background that fits the band. Each of the backgrounds seemed awkward and distracting. Try find one that best suits the band's attitude or genre. The guys also seem a bit stiff. Finding a place to shoot where they feel more comfortable may help.

I liked the individualized shots with the plain backgrounds. However, try to go with a dark background because a light background takes away from the subjects.

I agree with Laurie... 4489's my favourite too.

thanks for the tips, they were a little stiff and they were acting up and arguing a bit so that had a bit to do with the poses and such. Hopefully the next time we shoot they will be more at ease

I could be totally wrong and for all I know they could be a jazz ensemble, but they seem like an alternative band. I'm with Mayz here, the backgrounds are too pretty for these guys. I really like the waterfall thing going on, but not for them. They look like they can have some attitude going on, play off of that. Maybe try an industrial type setting... an old warehouse receiving dock, a building rooftop overlooking a busy city, an alleyway, something like that. You could maybe get low shooting up with whoever the lead singer in front crouching and the other guys standing behind looking down at the camera. But that's just my own thoughts.
