A bit late, but what is a road sign... a traffic sign? Any sign close to a road/street/lane/walkway/cycle way? Is it hanging on a pole or some other construction or may it even be painted on a sidewalk or on the street itself? Just wondering as this competition feels 'un-creative' and everything a little bit of the same to me. ;-)

Its everything. It could be all of what you mentioned and then some. Judge the shot for the shot. Look for clarity, colors(even B&W), contrast etc. and just look t te shot and see what you like or don't like about it. But whatever YOU decide is your decision and don't hesitate to comment even if you think the shot sucks or is funny.

No, no, no. There is to be no deviation here. If there is no road-based sign on a post then give it 1.

It should preferably be an American 'STOP' sign but, if the shot fails that simple prerequisite, then opt for a score of 5 or below. No messing. No prisoners.

WHAT?! Are you intentionally trying to stir the pot, get people excited, etc...? Where in the challenge description does it say 'STOP' sign, let alone 'American' (I'm American, but sticking up for those DPC members that are not)? It says, "...photograph a road sign.".

Challenge Description
Back for the fourth time, photograph a road sign. This topic will never die!

I'm, personally, really looking forward to the "american stop sign" challenge

I tend to agree with Imagineer...A STOP sign is the epitome of a road sign and 95% of the world does speak english (and those who don't aren't on this site anyhow) so it should likely be a STOP sign that wins.

I know that I'll be giving lower votes to variations of this theme. It has to meet the challenge, people!

If it's not DOT approved, give it a 1.

Better yet, DQ them.

Better still, hunt down those idiots who dare to deviate from the narrowest and bludgeon them with a DOT approved signpost.

thatcloudthere - I respect your skills/contributions to DPC, a little confused as to what you are saying - are you saying to meet the challenge it has to be a stop sign? If you are, then I have to respectfully disagree - that is NOT what the challenge states.

Curious also since I've not traveled overseas, do stop signs in other countries say 'STOP' using english, or do they say 'XXXX' where X is the local language?

Yet another example of a thread being used during the voting cycle to influence/manipulate perceptions of what the challenge is really defined as.

Note to Glad:

They are being "funny", dude. There are so many stop signs in this challenge it is hysterical. Hell of a lot of "dead ends" by cemterys also...

I'm still chuckling at this submission to one of the previous road sign challenges...

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/58/thumb/11120.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/58/thumb/11120.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Now how people misunderstood the stop sign requirements I have no idea.

Hmmmm,,, so in your view, anyone with a sign that says ARRET, or any other language would garner a lower mark. Nice to know just how tolerant you are in that regard.

In passing, I do believe you are sadly mistaken when you state that 95% of the world speaks english, and surprisingly there are some of us on this site that speak languages other than english.

C'est la vie mon ami.

Je suis being a dumbass!

Just kidding guys!

Edit: but you were all so friendly to me! I feel loved! If I thought somebody was seriously saying the things that Imagineer or I were saying I'd have a few words!

Here's how I will vote this challenge

10 - Any picture of this ' . substr('//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/09/Yellow_stop_sign.jpg', strrpos('//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/09/Yellow_stop_sign.jpg', '/') + 1) . '
road sign which is an Old style Yellow stop sign along IL-113, near Kankakee IL. Kankakee is about 30 miles south of Chicago. This road sign originated in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan. The new style white on red colour sign was a big step backwards in my oppinion.
1-9 - Any other picture based on the number of natural elements found in the picture.

Apparently though, you don't speak the language of sarcasm, or facitiousness.

We don't blame you Mike, we blame the Imagineer. He's a real troyblemaker, that one. There should be a red flag waving wherever he "stops" or "arretes" or "altos" or whatever he does, if even for an instant.

Shift hue from red to yellow...presto, instant 10! (with psychadelic leaves in the background, though)

WOW we've digressed from the actual question...Just to let you know how I'm voting. If it's a sign dealing the road (be it a stop or yield or giving road info it is still a road sign) I start at a certain point. If I can't read the sign then it goes down, if its blurry it goes down, etc. If it shows creativity it goes up, style goes up, etc.

I failed to enter this challenge because the one sign I wanted to shoot could not be done creatively enough in my eyes. We do have some very good ideas in this challenge, I hope people take that into consideration.

Sab,

why are you voting down for blur automatically (If thats' what you're saying)? Blur can be, and often is, a valid creative element in an image. "blurry pictures" of the dreaded snapshot variety don't fall into this category, but do please be on the lookout for creative and effective use of blur, as many people have clearly put a great deal of thought into this.

I almost entered a road killed deer, a tre sign of deer crossing come true, but it was fairly graphic, so I didn't

I had an awesome road sign I was going to use (I'll post it later) but I couldn't come up with a great context or moment for it to turn it into a great photograph...

My apologies to thatcloudthere and anyone else I may have offended with my comments on this topic. As so eloquently stated by atsxus, I failed to comprehend the sarcasm of the comments made....
On the good side, (having whacked myself upside the head)I now have a photo for the "PAIN" Challenge.' . substr('//tcwozere.co.uk/smileys/ac44.gif', strrpos('//tcwozere.co.uk/smileys/ac44.gif', '/') + 1) . '
