Tried searching but came of with 500 hits.
I've got the 17-40 F4L (77mm ring) lens (and I love it) but I'm wondering about filter size, or filter depth rather. I know on a film camera or full frame camera you'd need a slim filter to avoid vignetting and all kinds of potential problems, but what about the 10D? Does the crop factor finally be a pro (and not a con like always) and allow usual filters to be used. I'm thinking about CPL's in particular.
Anybody know?

I use the standard B&W MRC filters (UV and CPL) with the 17-40 F4.0L and there is no sign of vignetting wide open @17mm.
You are correct about the crop factor being an advantage in this situation as 17mm x 1.6 is close enough to a 28mm FOV.

Havn't got it yet (saving pennies...) but the 'pro' camera shop I use tells me that with a 1.6x or 1.3x camera you don't need the thin filters, although stacking a UV and a CPL might give you very slight vignetting, but not noticable without deliberately shooting a plain white wall and inspecting with an editing prog.

I have the 16-35 L and I use a slim filter, not because of the vignetting, but because I bought the best filter (glass) I could afford and that was a slim fitting. No use having a formula 1 race car of a lens and then putting a family saloon filter on it.

Thank you all.
I have a slim filter already, but I just got 2nd thoughts.
Good that I'm on the right track on all of this.
Falc: there is some difference between the 16-36 and 17-40, 2.8 vs 4 to mention one obvious one. Now I wish I'd bought the 16-35 in the first place, mainly because of 2.8, I shoot nightshots of Northern lighst and there speed is essential. But all of that is probably a non-issue for vignetting etc on the 10D sensor size.
