Whilst browsing the site yesterday, i came across Scalvert's portfolio. Not for the first time, but it was the first time I really looked.

One of the things I like to do when looking at some portfolio's is see where there 'niche' is - generally by looking at the users top 5 images and other high scoring shots you can quickly get an idea of where their strongest skills are - mine for example are primarily landscapes / B&W. Nothing unique there.

Scalvert's however is as obvious as obvious gets, the word 'creative' is an understatement.

Initially i was going to PM him saying he should be in the creative industry, but turns out he already is (just needed to read his profile) :D

I think a lot of people here would benefit hugely by looking at his portfolio. So many people posting on here asking how to score well, or asking how they can get a 6+ and all they need to do is exercise a tenth of the creativity of Scalvert.

As a graphic designer myself, I am supposedly 'creative' but I do not posses even a fraction of the creative genius he does, and I believe in that department Scalvert is pretty much alone on DPC.

This just reiterates my age old saying that taking good photographs is easy, anyone with half a brain can learn how to focus, expose and compose to high standards, but it's the idea that makes for an outstanding shot, which is where I and most others falter.

Some examples of the creative thought that has gone into his images.

I think most of us could learn something by looking at the idea behind these shots..

what jon said!!! shannon is easily one of the hardest working contributors here, not just raising the bar, but also helping the rest of us reach up to it! thanks for recognizing him, jon!

Amen! Certainly a role model for any aspiring DPCer...

true. true.

Wow! Thanks Jon- I'm blushing Pantone 485. I certainly don't have a monopoly on creativity, though. Kiwiness, Graphicfunk, EddyG, Ericlimon, Gordon and dsa157 (among others) are all brilliantly original photographers.

Brad who? LOL
Brad's unquestionably the most creative auto mechanic on this site. ;-)

Too bad you can't "learn" Shannon's gift! He has said many times himself that creativity is what makes the difference in his photogpraphy and it is so true. What I like best is it is not gimmicky or "look what I can do" - it is all brought together for the image to stand on its own.

I bow down in tribute :)

Shannon's creativity shines through his photos, his titles, and even his posts in the forums (read them, they'll make you smile).

And I want to thank him as well for being an online friend (and organizing that great DPC day trip)!

I am ashamed I forgot to mention what a wonderful person he always is in the forums. That counts number one for me.

I think I need a tissue. *sniff*

I always try to be lighthearted and civil in the forums. You never know whose day you might brighten.

yeah. he's creative. if only he were a nicer person people might like him more. I'm not entirely convinced he doesn't pay people to mark him as a favorite.

P-ness

ps I accept Paypal if you need another one, Shannon.

First of all, this is a great thread! Anyway, I signed up on this site shortly after I got my camera in March '03, but I didn't start participating until after I got my regular DPC update in my email in late '04 and saw "The Artist". I was amazed and inspired! I figured I should start participating and start learning from the awesomely talented folks here.

The thing that surprised me is how down to earth most everyone is. I found out first hand what a nice person scalvert is when I added him as a favorite photographer and I happened to be the 100th person to do so. He sent me a PM thanking me for adding him as a favorite, absolutely made my day!

On that note, BradP did the same thing yesterday when I added him as a favorite. It's awesome to be surrounded by such talent, especially knowing they're so nice and approachable :)

Great thread for a very deserving member. I love Shannon's work as well. Not only is he creative enough to come up with the idea but his execution is flawless. Wtg, Shannon!

Anyone who paints their kid green, stitches their mouth shut and manufactures a giant plug hole to put them in has got to be taking this too seriously - and has waaaaay too much time on their hands.
: )

I vote this as the most amusing thread of the day - another thing to thank Shannon for, I guess!!
