Best day so far, I sold 4 photos today. Still 4 hours left. Best I've ever done. 3 of one and 1 of another.

My highest for January is 4 also. Slow down quite a lot since I stopped uploading. Added 45 images in the last couple days. Up to 132 images and currently at $32.92.

My highest is 9 in one day :)

Take a long time at $0.80 per day to buy that new lens , maybe you can get one before your camera is obsolete, then again, maybe not.

Why do you guys give your sh*t away?

Woohoo! You're up to minimum wage... in Angola. On the other hand, it's more than I've made. :-(

True enough. I'm at about the same level of stock photo sales (ninety cents today for me, actually), but I've only been at for a little over a month and have spent very little effort on it. Five dollars a day should be easy to do within the next few months. If $5 is easy, then why not $10 a day? How long to buy a nice $500 lens at that rate?

now my photo is number 6 on the top 50 most downloaded, cool.

Best I've done is 2nd. 14 uploads on that one so far.

If we were true professionals we wouldn't do Shutterstock. But, its fun, someone is enjoying our photos, and I just passed $100.00 with my measly 3.4 MP Coolpix. P.S. sold 20 today.

I hear this a lot when shutterstock comes up (and similar sites).

Instead of just asking, please point those of us who are not professionals, have no desire to be professionals, and have no inclination to become stock photographers where we should go so that we could have fun with some of the shots we take.

Because it's a shame to see talented people dismiss their work as basically worthless.

I've been averaging $2/day for the last 8 days... which is $2/day more than I'm getting for leaving my files on my hard drive :)

I am curious... has anyone actually received a check? I'll feel a little silly if we're all being taken for a ride :) I honestly don't suspect any foul play, but I would feel some comfort in knowing that someone here has seen actual $$...

Exactly.

A lot of the work I see here I know could be worth thousands. No joke. If you all are just playing and just want to get your stuff out where people can see it, I say fine, have fun, Shutterstock is cool. But for the rest of you (and I hear many dreams and aspirations being voiced on these threads) that may have a serious future in photography, I say bad move. It devalues your work. This is not a step up. It is a mis-step.

Once you give these works and the rights attached to them away, you can never get them back. They can never be worth more then 20 cents a pop.

Here's a link to my gallery at Shutterstock.
If you see any picture there you can sell for a thousand dollars, I will pull it from SS and split it with you 50/50 -- no joke : )

If you see anything not worth 20 cents let me know and I'll pull that too ...

Do you think that little of your work Paul?

I can't sell your work for you, but I will point you in the right direction. Go here.

There are literally hundreds of professional rights protected stock agencies out there that can and will sell your work for well over a hundred dollars for each one time use of each image. Some of these are specialty oriented so that any good photographer should be able to find their niche. You might not start out selling 3 or 4 images a day like you will on stutterstock, but if you sell only one a month you’ve made more money. And you still retain control over the use of your image.

With shutterstock anyone can download 100 of your images for the whopping price of $139.95 for the lot and use them as they see fit on any medium for the rest of their life. And you made $20.

But if the photographer wants to sell it for that price - than it isn't worthless... It is really only their business and up to them.

When they share that business on a blog it then becomes open for comment. I will agree with the part it is "up to them."

I'm considering rights-managed stock as well, now that I've gotten started. Some additional points about my situation ... the images I have at SS are not the same as the ones in my DPC Prints Gallery, so I am trying to not compete with my own product. However, my prints have minimal sales as well.

Also, the photos I have at SS are shot with my 3.0 or even 1.92MP cameras -- the "real" stock agencies are likely to want larger and sharper images, probably requiring a significant investment of both cash and learning time. I also can't offer up a portfolio of 1-200 quality images like some people can, nor am I likely to have time or resources to build one any time soon. Yet at SS I've made a buck on a shot of a traffic camera I shot reaching out my car window on my way to work. Somehow I doubt I could make more off a shot like that elsewhere, be remain willing to see a demonstration that I'm wrong.

I admit, that I have a lousy sense of pricing and an antipathy towards marketing (actually doing it, that is). Maybe I should increase my print prices by a factor of ten and see if that can generate a sale or two ...

I know some professional stock photographers that would say otherwise.
The problem here is that, to an extent, it devalues the whole industry.
I won't bother going into the extent of that effect or in which areas etc.,
but needless to say it is true.

Unfortunately, there's f-all we can do about it :)
