I've been doing macro photography with a Nikon 990, which has excellent close up capability, but I'm having difficulty with depth of field. I can't seem to get all planes of an object in focus with the digital macro (I'm mostly photographing rings, which means I can't focus the whole band). What sort of attachment should I get? I've been researching, and it's quite confusing. So far I'm thinking about either a wide-angle lens, which supposedly works for close up, or close up filters. I'm open to any suggestions. What would give me the best focus on depth in macro? Price is a factor.
Thanks for your help in advance.

a wide angle lens will give you more DOF, but you're ultimate limiting factor is going to be your minimum aperature (largest f number).

The smaller the ap, the more the DOF.

do you really need all of the ring to be sharp? i used to photograph rings with my 995 and small DOF is a great way to accentuate some distinctive part of the ring (that is if it has one:))
