Is this an actual commercial put out by Volkswagen!?

If so, I must ask who was the marketing-genius that approved such a terrible campaign. Why would any company want to be even remotely associated with war, terror, and death. The person in charge of the campaign should be fired for lack of any marketing-sense.

I understand that wannabe "funny" aspect, now, as a consumer, I associate that product with the terrible turmoil in that part of the world.

Even as a Volkswagon fan/owner I gotta say- that's pretty bad. I'm not even one of those PC types either. Truly, truly tasteless and disappointing from the folks tha brought us some great ads in the past (the Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" ad was actually good, considering the fact that I NEVER thought I'd hear him in an advert).

Apparently it was mysteriously funded (about $70,000) and was produced using 35mm film - not an amateur choice really. Most likely an effective self promo for commercial producers.

Saw this on the news yesterday and VW has apparently filed a lawsuit against the people that have made this.

Can someone please describe the commercial, I can't see it either...

Download the Quicktime Plugin from www.quicktime.com
Firefox will probably offer you to download the plugin by itself if you don't have it.

guy wants to blow himself up infront of a busy cafe while in his car, he presses the button, and the explosion is completely contained inside car. it ends there with the slogan "small but tough"

oohhhh...that's not good! There are constantly examples of commercial producers putting a commercial together 'on behalf of' a company without the company's consent...commercial finds it's way onto the internet...marketing company gets sued...

I'm guessing that, most of the time, everyone wins...marketer and company/brand.

Sounds cute to me. But then I've been told I have a sick sense of humor.

Btw the guy is in the car when it blows up? You see like chunks blowing up against the side windows?

NO blood and guts, just the bright ornage of the explosion. Perhaps the most offensive part of it is that the "bomber" is stereotypically "palestinian" looking.

Robt.

I thought he looked french or italian, kinda meditteranian, rather than palestinian. Who's that french actor in Godzilla and Ronin? Looks a bit like him to me.

Sorry if I ruin any theory but Jean Reno is of a morroccon origin rather then European French.

Or more broadly Semitic. But honestly, would it have hit it's mark had they used an Eskimo instead? Sure some people of any race are sometimes responsable for blowing something up from time to time. If this had been 1945 they would have used a Japanesse in a Mitsubishi bomber instead of an Arab in a VW. This is 2005 though, and we see things like this happening on an almost daily basis.

So in my oppinion this mock ad is no more stereotypical then the acts that inspired it.

Ahh, he always plays french people in films tho, that's what got me confused :) Still, it's in the mediterranian area :)

it was a bad explosion at the very least, and the producer made sure to place a mother with infant in the patio of the cafe where the car supposedly blows up.

Wasn't even a thrilling blow up just an excellent use of lighting and computer generated effects to stimulate the bomb.
