I didn't expect to win, but I really thought I'd do a lot better than the 54th percentile. One guy commented about JPEG artifacts, so perhaps that was one thing that bothered some voters, but I feel like there's got to be more to it than that.

Tell me, if you can, why this picture ranked barely better than average. Be harsh, be blunt, don't waste time trying to be tactful. Thank you!

Okay...I respect your effort and idea. In my humble opinion, this probably ranked poorly because its visually compicated. When people rank hundreds of pictures, simplicity is sometimes better. With this picture, there is no definate focal point. I don't look at this picture right away and feel "good" inside. Its complicated and a little uneasy, if I may. Its an interesting angle, but not necessarily going to score high.

I think that picture that are simple, unique, and creative usually do the best. Although this is not always the case, its usually a safe bet. A lot of the people that vote are not advanced photographer that look for rule of thirds, exposure, composure, lighting, drama, blown out areas, noise, grain, proportions, etc. Some voters simply click rather quickly, and if they like the simple and quick emotional affect, they'll judge it highly.

Hope this helps.

Chris

PS. Look at the winners...not visually complicated at all. Very simple pics. Well deserved.

In the lower left corner I see slightly out of focus relection with a muddy green color cast. Had that section of the image been as crisp as the upper right half I would have scored it better then the 6 I did give it. That was a major drawback for me. In fact the only reason I scored it as high as I did was because of the strength of the composition. That part was great.

Yeah, it does. I guess you're right, one does need to have an image that has a lot of immediate impact. Thanks for the detailed commentary.

I agree with Chris. IMO, the composition is interesting but too complex; it's rather difficult just to figure out what is shown on this picture. Many voters would not even try to do this and would score it average...

Thanks about the composition. I definitely felt confident about that.

Gotta admit I didn't even notice the green cast- I guess I'm not sure that my monitor is calibrated correctly. (Or, perhaps, I just wasn't looking carefully enough.) I think the focus might actually have been better than it appeared, but I may have NeatImaged too much. -sigh-

I appreciate your taking the time for the criticism- I do find it helpful.

The play of blue and yelow light is quite nice, and the massing of forms are good. That said, these are not the most amazing stairs I have seen this week. It may be true that great photographers can shoot the mundane and produce great art, but it is a bit easier to get pretty pictures by taking pictures of pretty things. Shots that do best on this site seem to make nice thumbnails and would look good on a post card, textural studies tend to score in the 4-6 range.

I really like your composition here, but the image quality isn't quite there to back it up - there do appear to be some compression artifacts, and the focus is perhaps not as crisp as it could be. It was a tough challenge, so I wouldn't worry too much about your percentile.

Quality is a little ropey.

Funny sometimes how it is that by saying how your photo did so poorly, you may manage to somehow alienate some of the folks below you in the placement, that might just be happy with your position.

To be blunt, the photo was a tad difficult to comprehend, seemed a bit out of focus in one segment, and contained what seemed a shadow of something or other on the bottom left portion.

It wasn't a bad photo, but neither was it a great photo, hence its placement somewhere in the middle. I do however concur with the other folks who commented that the composition was great.

Best of luck in your future endeavours,

Ray
