ok i redid my site one last time before i become a full time student again here. if anyone could take a look and let me know their thoughts? I tried to fix all the problems that were apperent before. also how is it on the eyes? This site will be shown to a publisher (im going to be working on a book with a guy in chicago...im doing the photos) and to bands and other potential clients within the next 6 mos to a year. Obviously if i get more photos i will update, and if my photos dont sell the client thats one thing. I'm just concerned about the site right now though. Any thoughts, thanks in advance to anyone who gives me their opinion on it.

edit.....and i forgot to put the site.

Nice on the eyes. Looks as though it is difficult to add photos.

At a glance there are two things I'd change: lose the maroon borders on the navigation and either place the box (the layout) in the middle or increse the margin to the left, by ca. 1/4 of the layout width.

The borders in the navigation look a bit messy, and if there'd be three tones of gray, lightest for the top box (with the logo), darkest tone for the navigation and then a mid gray tone for the content box. Also, the titles in the nav are not sitting on the same line, which has a negative effect on the balance of the whole thing.

And, I'd make the copyright notice much smaller.

Good luck with it btw.

edit: the order of grays

Just some comments:

1. It might work better if you have your website also available in plain html
2. If you have more boxes than photos available, they shouldnt be visible (you can hide things with html code).
3. In the about section, I would consider saying that you are "seriously passionate about photography". Don't worry about saying how long you've been in it, or other things of the like.. if clients want to know, they'll ask.
4. When a gallery is clicked on, there are small boxes to the left, but nothing in the center. I would suggest putting an image there that sums up the gallery with a small bit of text at the bottom stating to click on the boxes to the left for larger images (yes, some people are that stupid).
5. The title of your site needs a little improving... think of it like a shop front.. it needs to be catchy so that people will remember who you are.
5a. The title of your website (midcoast) should say something like... Peter Hoffman - Midcoast Photography...
6. I've never designed a site in anything other than html, (I'm learning Flash), but you need to have Meta tages (keywords, description, etc). Its a really important way to get people to find your site. If they cant remember the website address, you had better hope they can find you by searching for your name or your company!
7. Did a music band really design your site?
8. Maybe a "welcome to my site... blah-blah-blah" on your front page would be cool.

Its a nice site, but since you asked for opinions, im going to be really picky...

I’m not too crazy about having the empty grey box's mixed in with the thumbnails of other images. they are just boring.

On the contacts page, the e-mail address is only selectable when the cursor is around it and not right on it. I have seen this happen with CSS, but I’ve never worked with flash so I don’t have a clue how to fix it.

but thats just me...

EDIT: in response to damelzakelly about meta tags, the major search engines dont use them any more, they are only used now for a search function of your own site, within yuor site. But she does bring up a good point about searches, the web crawlers dont handel flash too well (last i heard) so when they crawl your site, there is no text to pick up on.

In general I think it looks great. What kind of lens do you use to get that curvature effect? Do you mind if I ask where you took the railroad photo in the 'other' section?

Nice site...

ryan thanks. yeah its a 10.5 mm nikon fisheye lens. That railroad pic is actually the oldest pic there, took it with ilford delta b/w film, the tracks are in naperville, illinois, just next to my friends house.

Hey Petrakka,

Everything looks good, I don't have any visual suggestions. The only thing I could say is you have a lot of categories but a lot of the shots could all fit into your "band" category..including the live shots, venue shots, stuff like that. I'd fill up one category instead of spreading them out since clients, in all reality, most times won't go through an entire site.

Good luck!

quality pictures you have there -- looks really good and it's really simple and easy to navigate.

Looks good to me, I like the subtle texture as the background. The 'white space' gives it an artsy feel good for photo websites.

You will definitely want to move the table/frame to the relative center of the page.

As for the site being done in flash, you may want to mix it up a little to reduce download time. It's hard for me to tell what the download time is on your site because I have a high speed connection.

Every effect on the site could be just as easily produced with java which may save some downloading. But of course anyone who is going to view a page with photographs on them should either have high speed or expect the waiting. Anyway looks great over all.

I also just finished a site... would love it if you and everyone else could critique it harshly.

i like the design of the site it is nice and simple. The way it is laid out though, the pictures load pretty far down my browser page, so i have scroll to see them. I had some problems loading any pictures in the galleries sometimes, it was inconsistent. I don't know why that is. I have high speed internet though. Mainly though I would just make sure the pics load higher up on the page, and put in a contact and/or profile kind of section if you want people to know anything about the person behind the pictures, or if they want to comment on your pictures. Beleive it or not I have had a few random emails from people just commenting on my site.
