Figured I'd start this thread. Post any shots you guys got today that you want to share or any funny stories.

In attendance was myself, Lykofos (mike), Prof_fate (Chris), and dentman (Justin).

Alan I guess you couldn't make it -- and hans -- I was looking forward to meeting you too.

--

I got home and wanted to download my photos but my battery is really shot -- it's charging now.

Well, here's a funny story for ya! The first thing I did when I got home was change the camera settings so that the shutter won't release w/o a memory card in the slot! I bet those 50-60 photos were my best ones of the day too. DAMN IT!

bummer lykofos....at least it happened on a moderately crappy shoot. (color temp & weather) Im pretty much done with processing, I gotta find a place to put them....

Hera a few more worthy of public scrutiny. On the loco, well, i need to practice with my new camera. Focus not exaclty in the right place. Oh well.

As you can see, i have had some practice with train shots..the other shots need work.

Very nice. A lot more saturated than my images...what PP did you do? I definitely need some 'eye' work...your pics are much better than mine.
01/08/2005 01:37:08 PM · #11
thanks prof fate. I have found that presetting the white balance, for the D70 anyway, is paramount to good temperature. I didnt do much with these, my PP includes levels, shadow/highlight (VERY powerful) and sometimes a little saturation boost. In order for the saturation to work, the color data needs to be there. Hence the white balance preset. You can always shoot raw and set the temperature at home, but Im striving to get good images out of camera, like the film guys do! thanks again for the kind words!

Well, I just got back from Ritz...you were right, they took it back no problem although they didn't have the backpack style there, I did get one that is a bit bigger and even extra room for a lens or two and a flash or something and it has tripod hooks :-D

btw, Justin...your photos look 50 times better than mine -- I just briefly went through them, didn't edit any yet...but it's like we were at a completely different place or something -- great work!

back from work. Work a double tomorrow...probably nice and sunny too.
Two more - one kind of arty, pulled the color from the turn signal lens.

Justin Did you do a custom white balance before we started shooting? used a gray card, white paper, what?

He used a white piece of paper -- same way as the rebel sets custom wb.
01/09/2005 01:06:11 AM · #20
Nice pics everyone.

Damn Justin, those photos do look like they were taken somewhere else entirely! The hues and saturation you got is unbelievable for such an overcast day. Great work.

I just back from work, and may even post process some of mine tonight! Not a week later this time. Btw, can ya email me that thing too?
01/09/2005 02:09:03 AM · #21
IMHO thats the ticket.... overcast days provide a great amount of light, you can push the temperature up ordown a bit without completely blown highlights..........
01/09/2005 02:12:36 AM · #22
Chris - yes I used a kodak whitecard for setting my white balance. Its crucial IMHO to getting good temperature. you vcanalso use the grey side of the same card.... I preferwhite. though. sorry for typos... been out drinikin. :)]\

Sure. I tried to make a 'gray card' on my laser printer...i need cardstock as 'paper' is too thin/flimsy.
