Congratulations and good luck to you, Jon...you've added many more years to your life with this decision. Glad you'll be around longer to share your photographs! :o)

Congrats and good luck. I’m on year #2 and I still sometimes crave them when I’m around smokers; especially in a bar or the like.

Congrats on a great decision- I hope you stick with it. (Now stay the heck away from voting on my pics!)

Nicorette gum helped me (almost 5 years ago now). I feel great! Hang in there, it's worth it!!!

I quit over two years ago and still dream about smoking cigarettes!

I've taken to smoking one cigar a month once I was comfortable that I wasn't going back to cigarettes!

3 thoughts from my experience:

1) I almost caved right away...I kept asking myself "why am I quitting?" and trying to convince myself it wasn't worth it. I had serious headaches and got incredibly dizzy and drowsy. Know why you're quitting and keep reminding yourself...

2) Find a substitute. Instead of smoke breaks, I continued to step outside for a few minutes at my regular times for "apple breaks" at work. It allowed me to take a regular break and although it sounds cheesy (it is), it helped...

3) Don't drink too much for the next while if you can help it...a lot of people fall back this way.

Quitting is easy. All you have to do is not smoke. After all, who decides if\when you're going to smoke a cigarette? You do, right? Just decide that you're not going to, and then the rest is easy. Prove to yourself that you are in control--not some inanimate object.

Good luck!

Eight-and-a-half years for me. I planned it about a month ahead of time, picked the date (July 1, 1996) and it worked! I've never really had any kind of cravings or anything like that (not that I'm complaining). When I smoked, on workdays I used to take about a two-block walk right after lunch and again in the afternoon to 'light up'. After I quit I continued to take the walks and they were a lot more enjoyable. By the second day the air smelled a lot fresher and food tasted a lot better and I knew I never wanted to go back. I decided that I wasn't going to worry about gaining weight right away and I did eat more, but the following year I was able to get my weight back down without too much trouble. Another poster mentioned dreaming about smoking; I smoke in my dreams once in a while too, but not to worry, I will never again smoke while I'm awake!

If you're not on a low-sugar diet, orange slices and butterscotch candies make good low-fat substitutes for cigarettes.

Day 7 here. I haven't smoked at all this year : )
I'm using patches to cover the nicotine addiction but still find myself turning to go out for a smoke every time I brew up. Habits eh?

Good luck Jon. I'm (literally) with you all the way!

I can vouch for this one - my roommate last year had quit smoking for a few months and said he never really had cravings. But, we threw him a huge birthday bash and he had a bit to drink - he started smoking again that night. I have many other friends who have never even been regular smokers - but once they have some alcohol in them, they're lighting up.

Congrats Jon. Great decision. I quit on Dec 13 2002 at 11:00 :)

The first few days are the toughest. I went cold turkey and drank lots of water and kept real busy.

Yup. Going strong. How are you quitting? Cold turkey, patch, Nicorette, tied to a bed for 6 months?

If you're a stats kinda guy, you might find the Quit Meter kind of interesting.

Good luck!
