The lens expansion continues.
So far I've got the kit(doh!) and the wonderfully inexpensive 50mm f1.8 prime.
I've realized I'd like to get something with a little more of the wider angle available of the kit lens, but the speed of the 50mm prime so I can get a wider field of view in darker conditions.
But I don't know if I should be looking at a standard, wide, superwide or what. I'm just looking for something to bring me more towards a more normal field of view with better aperture options. Help!

Sigma makes a very good 20/1.8. Canon's 28/1.8 is another to look at, or the Canon 35/2.

Just my suggestion, but a 24-70 2.8 is a greta all around lens! I have the sigma version, and it coulnt get any sharper. If ya need Canon the spend the extra money. I have used that one too, and I liked the quietness, but images are Just about the same

The kit lens is 18mm on the wide end...not many choices to get wider, and none will be cheap.
I recall seeing a 10-22, by canon i think. that would be nice.

if u want wider you're gonna have to pay. I know the 15 mm fisheyes on dSLR's really lose a lot of their distortion and thus turn into a pretty good standard wide angle lens. Thats if u can stand to lose the awesomeness of a fisheye. There's also 8mm fisheye's. If u want straight wide angle though (wider than the kit) i think the 10-22 is one of few choices out there, and it'll be tough to get good aperture options. Canon i think has a 14mm prime but im pretty sure its at least a grand.

I bought a Canon 15mm f2.8 fisheye, which I use with the 20D Here are a couple of examples.

It can give a fisheye appearance, depending on where the horizon is, or you can get just a wide angle look to your shots. As petrakka says, the DSLR does smooth out the fisheye a lot. |
